7.28.18 BOSS Sprints Results

For the eighth time since 2012, the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series touring stars took on the Monster Half Mile at the Miley family’s Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. And for the eighth time, a new face graced victory lane. Last night, it was Lima, Ohio pilot, Ty Tilton, who picked up his first ever BOSS sprint car win. After making the redraw he then drew the worst pill in the bucket. Tilton started 9th and methodically worked his way to the front in the Performance Powder Coating, Tilton Trucking, Schaeffer’s Oil, Benic Enterprises, Claxton Engines, Wide Open Graphics, Lee’s Chicken of Lima #42.

The evening began with 21 cars signed in for racing action. The field was divided into three heat races with the top 3 finishers advancing to the redraw. TCB Speed heat race #1 was won by Kory Crabtree who charged from 5th to run the high side to a convincing win. Hoosier Tire / American Racer Tire heat race #2 was won in equally dominating fashion by Cody Gardner who started from 4th. Gardner had set the fastest times of the night during hot laps and again in heat race action. All Pro Cylinder Heads heat race #3 found yet another convincing win, this time by current tour point leader, Bill Rose, who started 2nd and checked out for his win.

Following 3 heat races with convincing winners, certainly some fans may have thought the main event could be a snoozer. They could not have been more wrong. Twenty-one of the bravest in the country roared to the starters green flag, and immediately cars were 3 and 4 wide. Slide jobs on the monster half mile at PPMS are sliders that last 100 or more yards! There were “hold your breath moments” almost every lap!

The initial start saw tour regular, Bob McMillin, get upside down in turn 3. He climbed from the car and walked away, but the race required a complete restart. Outside pole sitter, Bill Rose, immediately took command and opened a moderate lead. Within a lap, polesitter Cole Ketcham tucked into the runnerup spot with Cody Gardner in 3rd.

Ketcham kept pace with Rose as Gardner closed to battle for the runner-up spot. On lap 10, Gardner was able to make the move around Ketcham, and set sail for the leader. Two laps later, Ketcham caught the fence in turn 1, taking a nasty flip, but climbing from his #41 unhurt.

Back under green, Rose continued to show the way with Cody Gardner now slowly closing the gap. But as fans focused on the race for the lead, Ty Tilton was on a mission a lane lower than the front 2 cars. As Gardner finally got the run on Rose for the lead, Tilton made it three wide off turn 4 and stole the lead at the line.

As the final laps wound down, Tilton pulled away to a dozen car length lead with Gardner riding the rim in second and Rose back to third. Kory Crabtree, who had started 6th, got rolling well late and got to fourth place at the line. Local wing driver Brandon Matus charged from 11th to complete the top 5. Paul Dues earned the Bridge Restaurant “Hard Charger” award by starting 16th and getting to 6th. Carmen Perigo, Matt Cooley, Jeremy Kornbau, and Joe Liguori completed the top 10.

Next up for BOSS is a 2 day weekend this Friday and Saturday, August 3rd and 4th. Friday is the Open Wheel Championship at Atomic Speedway paying $2,000 to win. The Saturday show is the Jack Hewitt Classic at Waynesfield Raceway Park paying $3,000 to win. Both venues have been the site of absolutely epic finishes including last year’s Hewitt Classic when Drew Rader slipped past USAC champ Dave Darland to win by about 6 inches! Watch for details on both shows in the coming days.
