By Brian Liskai FREMONT, Ohio – Rob Chaney powered by Cap Henry with just eight laps remaining and drove to his first 410 sprint win of the year at Fremont Speedway on Finish Line Fuels Night. Chaney, aboard the Aaron Call, Janet Holbrook owned #83, patiently followed Henry, who won two weeks ago at “The Track That Action Built,” then used lapped cars to close and eventually take the lead, driving to his 11th career win at Fremont.
“It’s easy to be a zero in this sport. It only takes about one more race. The last time I won I said you don’t know how many more of these you can win…there’s a lot of tough guys out here and a lot of young guys coming up. Janet and Aaron are unbelievable. They just understand this sport and for two people for the success they’ve had are very humble and that makes a big difference sitting in the seat,” said Chaney beside his J&J Auto Racing, Winters Rear-ends, Dominator, Astro Titanium, Schoenfeld Headers backed machine.
“It was brutal up top in three and four…you really had to watch but I figured that was how I was going to win it. I was just telling my son this week I probably cost myself a lot of money trying to win verses running second but that’s why I come here,” added Chaney.
D.J. Foos was able to storm from 13th starting spot to a fourth place finish to keep his title hopes alive for the All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST 410 Championship Series presented by Ohio Logistics.
Fremont’s Seth Schneider has been racing a 305 sprint car for six years. There have been ups and downs but lately he has had several very good performances and it paid off Saturday. Schneider led all 25 laps of the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature, including surviving a couple of restarts mid-way through, to record his first ever sprint car win.
“We knocked the stupid out of the race car a few weeks ago. This hasn’t set in yet…it’s going to be a fun night. I have no idea what to say…this is awesome. I have to thank Kevin Schlachter. He’s the car owner, set-up guy…he does it all. Also my dad, he got me into this and helps. My fiancée Joni that puts up with all this crap we do every week. Scott Gressman builds an awesome motor and Triple X is bad ass and KSI Ventures, Preferred Automation and Shelluke’s Bar and Grill,” said Schneider.
For the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship Series presented by Engine Pro, Kyle Capodice will edge closer to Paul Weaver’s point lead with his third place finish.
Wayne, Ohio’s John Brooks led all 15 laps of the McCullough Industries 602 Late Model feature for his second consecutive win. The victory for the defending track champion is his seventh career at the track.
“I tried to rip the back of it off in that first heat race and Chris (Watson) put it back together for me. She’s working pretty good…Chris put the special set-up on it. I have to thank my wife and Chris…he’s there every day working on this car and my mom and dad, Nancy and Roger who couldn’t make it out tonight. I also want to thank Snack Time Vending, Foster Auto Repair in Wayne and Fremont for having this class,” said Brooks in the Engine Pro Victory Lane.
In a crash-filled Burmeister Trophy Dirt Truck feature, defending Fremont Speedway track champion Keith Sorg took the lead on the white flag lap and edged out Dustin Keegan by .053 seconds for his first feature win of the season. It was Sorg’s fourth career victory at the track.
“It’s tough to keep your concentration with all those yellows. You just hope you don’t mess up on the restarts. I like racing with Dustin, he races you clean and it’s a blast,” said Sorg beside his D&R Transmissions; Fremont Fence; Advanced Auto Parts; M&L Excavating backed #4s.
In the 30 lap Fort Ball Pizza Palace Henry and Byron Reed brought the field to green but before a lap could be completed Reed flipped in turn four. Though he was uninjured and the crew tried valiantly to make repairs, Reed was unable to rejoin the field. On the next green – the race would go the distance without a caution – Henry jumped into the lead over Chaney, Paige Polyak, Chris Andrews and Adam Kekich. Henry drove into lapped traffic on lap seven and Chaney closed with Polyak staying within striking distance.
As Henry and Chaney pulled away the battle for third heated up involving Polyak, Andrews and quick qualifier Tyler Gunn. Things really got interesting by lap 13 when heavy lapped traffic came into play. Chaney ran right off Henry’s rear bumper while Polyak, Gunn, Andrews and now Foos swapped the third spot all around the track. At the half-way point the running order was Henry, Chaney, Gunn, Polyak, Andrews, Foos and Stuart Brubaker.
While Henry picked his way through the traffic, Chaney patiently waited for his chance and took it utilizing the high line in turn four on lap 22. Once in the lead Chaney began to pull away as Henry battled to stay close as Gunn and Foos were locked in a torrid battle for third. Chaney rim-road to victory over Henry, Gunn, Foos and Brubaker.
Cody Bova and Schneider brought the field to green for the 25-lap 305 sprint feature but a Kyle Peters spin necessitated a second start. When the green flew Schneider rocked into the lead with Bova running in his tire tracks while Ricky Peterson, Matt Foos and Landon LaLonde battled for third. The caution flew for an Alvin Roepke spin on lap three with the restart order Schneider, Bova, Peterson, LaLonde, Foos, Tyler Street and Nate Dussel.
Schneider started to build on his lead as the laps ticked off with Bova holding off Peterson for second. A Justin Adams spin on lap 13 bunched the field up once again but on the restart Jamie Miller tumble don the front stretch bringing the action to a halt. Miller, who won the previous night at Attica Raceway Park, was uninjured but done for the night. When the green flew again Schneider hit his marks perfectly and started to build his lead once again.
As Schneider and Bova pulled away slightly, the battle for third was entertaining as LaLonde, Kyle Capodice, Nate Dussel, Ricky Peterson and Foos contended. With five laps to go Schneider held a slim lead over Bova as Capodice closed in on the leaders. Schneider was not to be denied, taking the checkers by a car length over Bova with Capodice, LaLonde and Foos rounding out the top five.
Brooks and Steve Sabo brought the field to green for the 15 lap late model feature with Brooks immediately jumping out to a commanding lead over fourth starter Ky Harper, Dustin Keegan, Kyle Dukeshire and Sabo. A caution for Louis Kimberlin on lap five kept Harper close to Brooks. However Harper would spin on lap nine, handing second to Chester Fitch who started scratch on the field. Brooks was too strong, as he drove away to the win over Fitch, Dukeshire, Harper and Sabo.
It took awhile to get the 20-lap dirt truck feature rolling as several multi-truck crashes occurred in the beginning. Dustin Keegan would lead with Sorg and Shawn Valenti challenging. Sorg and Valenti made contact exiting turn two on lap five, with Valenti spinning. When the green flew Keegan, Sorg and Jeff Ward waged a war for the top spot. A couple of cautions on laps 13 and 14 kept the field close as Keegan continued to lead.
A final caution with just two laps to go gave Sorg the opportunity he had been waiting for. He quickly drove to Keegan’s outside and grabbed the lead coming to the white flag. Keegan didn’t give up and made one last ditch effort for the win exiting turn four as he and Sorg ran door to door to the checkers. Sorg edged Keegan for the win with Ward, Brewer and Valenti – who came from the tail – rounding out the top five.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 5 on Kear’s Speed Shop Night. It will also be Family Fun Night with lots of activities for the kids and a scavenger hunt offering up great prizes. It will be an All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads FAST 410 Championship Series presented by Ohio Logistics point event with the 305 sprints, dirt trucks and late models in action.
