Busti, NY (July 3, 2021): It was a parade of veteran winners going to Victory Lane at Stateline Speedway Saturday night as the Zimmer’s Service Center ULMS Super Late Model Series made a visit. Two time ULMS Champion Dave Hess Jr continued his two-class dominance in the Super Late Models and the UMP Modifieds, easily picking off the wins. Max Blair led every lap of the RUSH Crate Late Model feature enroute to yet another victory. Defending champion John Boardman scored yet another Penn-Ohio Pro Stock win, Greg Johnson returned to the RUSH Pro Mod Victory Lane and Chris Horton scored another dominating win in the Challenger night-capper.
The UMP Modified A-Main was the first feature of the night and started with former champion Dennis Lunger on the pole position with Zach Johnson to his right. Dave Hess Jr, the winner the last two weeks, started twelfth. Lunger shot to the immediate lead over Greg Johnson, Michael McGee, Troy Johnson, and Kevin Smith. McGee was second at two laps with Cale Crocker coming into the top five, replacing Smith. At lap five Crocker had got by Troy Johnson for fourth when a spin in turn two by Deven Dudenhoeffer brought the yellow flag out for the first time. At lap five, coming down the back straight, Hess made his presence known, taking fifth, then fourth at lap seven, and third at lap eight. Second was Hess’s when the field hit the back straight at lap nine, but caution appeared for David Warrior, who had spun in turn two but never stopped. For the green it was Lunger with Zach Johnson restored to second. Hess, McGee, and Crocker filled out the top five. Four cars, Warrior, Chris McDonald, Bryon Johnson, and Paul Nelson, tangled in turns three and four but all were able to continue after green. At the halfway point Hess and Lunger were side by side at the line with Hess having a slight edge. Crocker was now third with Zach Johnson and McGee filling out the top five. McGee was fourth at lap fourteen and that set the top five at the checkers as points leader Hess picked up his third consecutive win over Lunger, Crocker, McGee, and Johnson.
The RUSH Pro-Mods were brought to green by Michael Eschrich and Greg Johnson but yellow appeared before the cars could complete a lap due to Brian Mohawk coming to a halt out of turn two. When the race got started in earnest it was Johnson leading Eschrich, Scott Gurdak, a former champion, Al Brewer, (a winner earlier this season,) and Vaughn Nystrom. By lap five defending champion Lunger was fifth. The order remained the same through lap fifteen when Ryan Howard spun in turn two and yellow was shown. After green Gurdak got by Eschrich for second with Brewer also getting by. The final yellow came at the white flag when Derek Peterson spun in turn four. At the finish it was Johnson, Brewer, Gurdak, Eschrich, and Lunger.
The main event of the evening was the 30-lap, $3000 to win ULMS feature. After two sets of time trials, heat races, and a “scramble” the field was set with three time defending series champion, the current point leader, Max Blair on the pole and Dave Hess Jr, a two-time series champion, on the outside front row. Blair led the first lap followed by Hess, Darrell Bossard, Jake Finnerty, and Greg Oakes. Finnerty was third at two laps. At lap four Hess got by Blair for the lead. Yellow appeared at lap seven when Chub Frank and Anthony Marotto spun in turn two. Yellow again appeared at lap thirteen when Jason Genco slowed to a halt, the reported victim of a failed driveshaft. At halfway the order at the front was now Hess, Blair, Bossard, Finnerty, and Coleby Frye. The battle for fifth was side by side between Wyatt Scott and Frye at lap sixteen with Bossard and Finnerty side by side for third a lap later. Scott got fifth and Finnerty was third by lap nineteen. Frye was not done yet and was back to fifth at lap twenty-one. The final order at the end at the end of the thirty laps was Hess, Blair, Finnerty, Bossard, and Frye.
The Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks had Bill Applebee and defending champion John Boardman at the front of the field for the start, but it was third-starting Jason Covey leading the pack at lap one with Applebee, Douglas Eck, Boardman, and Shane Applebee following. The race for second was side by side at three laps between Applebee and Eck when David Baker spun in turns three and four. The order remained the same after green for nearly a lap with Boardman up to second at the line over Eck, Gary Fisher, and Bill Applebee. Yellow was shown at lap six when Bill Applebee pulled to the infield but stopped too close to the track. At seven laps Wesley McCray was fifth. The race for the lead was side by side between Covey and Boardman with three to go with Boardman solidly in the spot at the white flag, going on to another win, with Covey second, Eck third, Fisher fourth, and Joe Stajnrajh fifth.
The RUSH Late Models started with Max Blair and Matthew Sipes on row one with Blair leading third-starting Scott Gurdak through lap one with Sipes, former champion and last week’s winner, Darrell Bossard, and David Parker following in fifth. Bossard was third at lap three. D J Krug brought caution number one at lap four when he spun in turn two. Sipes spun in turn turns one and two and was collected by Lonnie Waldron, Darrin Waldron, Randy Hall, and Chad Clement with Clement then retiring pit side. Sipes again spun in tire two. At lap five it was Blair leading Gurdak, Bossard, Parker, and Jason Genco, a former champion. Lonnie Waldron spun for the next yellow at lap twelve in turn three. At thirteen laps Bossard took over second. The finish wound up as Blair, Gurdak, Bossard, Parker, and Genco.
The Challenger feature finished the night and started with Matt Marcy and Holden Heineman at the front, Marcy led lap one over Heineman, John Mease, Chris Horton, and Tommy LaBarbera. The yellow flag was needed at lap two when Marcy slammed into the back straight wall and was then hit head on by Horton, who kept going after the wreck. For the green it was Heineman, Mease, Horton, Rachel Moller, and Cory Brown leading the way. Mease was the leader at lap two with Horton coming to second, Heineman falling to third, then Brandon Huffman and Jon Seekings, all the way from fourteenth on the grid. Heading into turn three at lap three Horton was the new leader over Mease with Huffman now third over Heineman and Seekings. Brown got into the wall at turns three and four at lap four but caution had already been shown for debris in turn one. Another caution for more debris as soon as the race was again green this time in turn two. By the halfway point it was Horton opening up his lead over Mease, Huffman, LaBarbera, and Seekings. The order was the same over the remainder of the event with Horton eventually holding a quarter lap lead at the checkers.
