7.7.18 Swainsboro Raceway Results

Over 100 cars packed the fields at Swainsboro Raceway Friday and Saturday night for the Budweiser sponsored Annual
Firecracker 100. Friday night consisted of qualifying and heat races in all divisions. Twenty-eight drivers qualified in
the Roger Wheeler Construction Road Warrior division and competed in heat races for a starting position in Saturday nights
$5000 to win event. All other divisions qualified or ran heat races for Saturday’s $2000 to win feature events.
After heat races on Friday night, Brent Herndon picked up the inside pole position with Kip Poole starting outside. With
two attempts at starting double file, the field went to a single file start with Herndon out front. Daniel Roland quickly
jumped to the inside of Lance Griffith for the fourth position. Monk Gulledge stuck the bottom line to pass Poole for
second off turn four. Lap 5, Herndon and Gulledge separate themselves from the field as a three car battle for third
between Poole, Roland, and Jamie Whitaker continued for several laps. Lap 7, Poole slips high off turn two and Whitaker
drops down low to pass for third. Lap 9, on the restart from caution, Roland peaks to the inside of Poole as they battle
side by side down the back stretch and Roland takes fourth. Herndon holds the gap out front as Jamie Whitaker moves in on
Gulledge for second. Lap 13, Gulledge and Whitaker make contact off turn two for second but Gulledge holds on. Lap 16,
Whitaker tries the inside off turn two but Gulledge slams the door. Brent Herndon takes the checkered nearly 3 seconds
over Monk Gulledge in second, Jamie Whitaker third, Daniel Roland fourth, and Kip Poole fifth.
Picking up the fastest qualifying time and heat race win, Blake Smith held the pole position in the Southland Insurance
602 Late Model division. As the green waived, Richie “Rocketman” Stephens took the lead in turn one. Lap 2, “Tall Cool One” Terry Lumley moved by “Little Sexy” Cody Overton for third in turn four. Lap 5, on the restart after caution,
Overton slips in one and Tyler Mimbs moves in but Overton sticks the spot. As Stephens held a hefty lead, second place
Blake Smith began turning faster lap times running him down in the turns. Overton slips gets shuffled back on the outside
as Jim Rogers moves into fourth and Tyler Mimbs fifth. Lap 13, Overton off the pace forced to pit with a flat. AS the
laps wind down, Stephens and Smith begin making moves through lapped traffic. Richie Stephens takes the checkered, Blake Smith second, Terry Lumley third, Jim Rogers fourth, and Tyler Mimbs fifth.
Seventeen drivers competed in the Daniels Chevrolet Pure Stock divsion for the $2000 to win. Hometown boy Dustin Watkins set the pace on the inside with legendary Jason “Flywheel” Floyd outside. Three wide for the lead, Alex Sturkie moved to the inside of Watkins with Floyd outside. Watkins takes the lead, Roger McKenzie moves into third. Lap 3, four car battle for the lead off turn four Floyd takes the lead. Lap 4, Floyd stops in top turn three with a flat. Brent Herndon
passes Josh Nelms for fourth. Lap 5, Alex Sturkie washes up losing the third position. Sturkie and Nelms both forced to
pit. Roger McKenzie hot on Watkins for the lead, George Williamson moves in on Herndon to battle for third. Lap 9,
Williamson makes an inside pass for third by Herndon. Lap 12, after pitting with flat and coming back from the rear,
Jason Floyd moved into the fourth position. Coming to a green white checkered finish, Roger McKenzie takes the lead from
Watkins, Floyd moves into third. Roger McKenzie takes the checkered, side by side at the flag Dustin Watkins takes second
place by inches over Jason Floyd, George Williamson fourth, and Jimmy Haynes fifth.
Battling for $5000 to win, Tyler Sanders earned the top starting position in the Roger Wheeler Construction Road Warrior
division. Jason Floyd and Graham Stevenson also picked up heat race wins Friday night starting second and third. At the
green, Sanders took the lead with Floyd second, Dustin Watkins moved into third. Lap 3, running sixth Austin Scarboro was
forced to pit for the night with a broken rear end. Lap 4, Stevenson sideways off turn four, Wiley McDaniel tries the
inside. Lap 9, Luke Scott pits in the sixth position. Lap 11, Cody Berryhill takes the inside of McDaniel for fifth off
turn two. Lap 14, Sanders and Floyd move into lapped traffic. Sanders hung up as Floyd makes the pass for the lead.
Coming off turn four, Sanders brings out the caution as a lapped car forces him to the bottom of the inside wall. Cody
Berryhill and Graham Stevenson swap paint battling over the third position. Lap 20, Dustin Watkins inside Floyd for the
lead as Stevenson moves in making it a three car battle for 5k. Lap 22, Berryhill in fourth has a right rear flat, Tyler
Sanders moving through the 28 car field back to seventh. Top four swapping paint for the lead, McDaniel gets inside
Stevenson for third. Lap 23, leader Floyd off the pace with a broken ball joint. On a mission, Sanders back to the
fourth position. Top four still stacked, Wiley McDaniel takes the lead. Wiley McDaniel takes the checkered, Dustin
Watkins second, Kip Poole moves from starting 25th to take third. After post race inspection and pending tire samples,
Kip Poole earns the win, Tyler Sanders second, Jaime Foskey third, Graham Stevenson fourth, and Kary Alexander fifth.
Kary Alexander and Ricky Strange each earned an addition $100 for fifth and sixth place finishes sponsored by GRW
Competition Engines.
Joshua Bishop set the fastest time in Friday night qualifying to lead the Zaxby’s Crate Late Model division to green.
Bishop takes the lead in one as Jimmy Thomas makes a run and takes the lead off four. Lap 3, Ches Chester moves inside
outside pole sitter Rhett Carter for fourth. Lap 5, Will Herrington moving from fifth looks inside Bishop for second.
Lap 7, Herrington take the second position. Lap 10. Chester takes third from Bishop as Jimmy Thomas leads by half track.
Lap 15, after restart from caution, Will Herrington gets a run on leader Jimmy Thomas but can’t hold on and Rhett Carter
pits losing the sixth position. Chester gets a run off turn four for second but loses control in turn one and Herrington
regains position. Lap 17, Jordan Feider gets loose off four and shuffles back allowing Ben Faircloth and Pearson Lee
Williams to make the pass for fifth. Jimmy Thomas takes the checkered, Will Herrington second, Ches Chester third, Joshua
Bishop fourth, and Ben Faircloth fifth.
Ending the best night of racing action for the year, 20 four cylinder Scare House of the South 440’s scrubbed metal for
$2000 to win. John Hooks and Tyler Davis both earned heat race wins Friday night leading to the green. Coming off turn
four, Justin Stephens jumped out front as Rod Morris and John Hooks battled for second. Tyler Davis falls back to the
fourth position. Lap 3. Tommy Davis takes fifth from Chris Atkinson. Lap 5, starting in the back after running hot
Friday night, Andrew Smith took fifth on the outside. Lap 7, Smith broke off turn two. Chris Atkinson took the outside
line down the back to take over fifth. Lap 9, John Hooks off the pace in the third position stops in turn two. Lap 10,
Rod Morris pits running hot and giving up the second position. Lap 11, coming from the back Hooks moves back to the
fourth position. Lap 12, sticking it to the bottom Tommy Davis passes for fourth. Justin Stephens takes the checkered
earning his first win of the season, Tyler Davis second, Chris Atkinson third, Tommy Davis fourth, and Kurt Starling
fifth.
