7.7.23 Bedford Speedway Results

Christian Rumsey came clear from New York to race at Bedford Friday night and left with the big prize as he took the 305 sprint car feature. It was his first ever Bedford win as he held off the late challenge from Robbie Barchey to claim the victory.

In other action, Kyle Lear took the Limited win, Derek Hinish was the victor in the annual Charlie Walter Pure Stock feature, Evan Taylor won the EMod feature before Wayne Brenize continued his unretirement tour with another 4 Cylinder win.

Christian Rumsey brought the 305 field to the green and led the first three laps. But Josh Spicer had used some wild outside passes to move into second by that time and he grabbed the lead on lap 4. Rumsey did not fall back but chased Spicer for quite a few laps before making a successful pass for the lead on lap14.

From that point on, Rumsey pulled away as Spicer faded late. Robby Barchey took second from Spicer on lap 17 and Roger Irvine also got by a lap later. Rumsey held on for the eventual win, followed by Barchey, Irvine, Spicer and Steve Kennewell. Heats went to Ryan Lynn, Reed Thompson and Barchey.

Pole sitter Tyler Ritchey led the Limited field to the green and led the first three laps. But Kyle Lear was in hot pursuit. When the front pair encountered a much slower lapped car, Ritchey zigged while Lear zagged in avoidance. Lear’s maneuver was the better choice and he emerged as the new leader. Although the field was slowed five times by minor incidents over the next five laps, Lear prevailed on each restart.

When the gang settled down to serious green flag racing after lap nine, Lear held on with Ritchey in pursuit. In the late laps Devin Weyandt moved in to challenge Ritchey but could not make a pass stick. Ritchey made a last lap move on Lear, but Lear held on for the big win. Ritchey, and Weyandt trailed. Shawn Shoemaker, who came from 14 starting spot and Ryan Sager completed the top 5. Ritchey, Weyandt and Casey Steinhoff won the heats.

Derek Hinish has had a rough 2023 season but he picked the right night to turn his luck around, leading the Charlie Walter tribute event from flag to flag, Driving a different car than his usual mount, Hinish found himself on the pole for the biggest Pure Stock race of the year and he made good. He pulled out to the early lead, clearly the fastest cat in the field, but as the laps clicked off the gang closed in. Eventually the lead pack was 4 cars strong with Denver Dishong and Dalton Ritchey trading the right to chase Hinish.

Things changed when second place runner Ritchey stopped on the back stretch on lap 13, leaving Dishong in second place. Dishong applied the pressure on Hinish who appeared not as dominating as the laps went by. But Dishong, after challenging Hinish for several laps, managed to bank off the frontstretch wall on lap 30, causing a caution.

While Dishong made a hasty pit stop, Dalton Weyant moved into second and applied pressure on Hinish over the last 12 laps. But Hinish prevailed for the win over Weyant, a fast closing Kyle Beckett, Charlie Clise and Cody Jarvie. Clise and Weyant won the heats.

The EMOD event started off wildly as Jonathan Taylor spun in front of the field in turn one.

On the restart, George Beckett took the early lead but Evan Taylor shot by on lap two. Mike Altobelli also got by setting up a race long battle at the front. Although they ran close with Altobelli making repeated attempts at the lead, Taylor led to the finish. Altobelli took second ahead of Beckett, Donnie Farllng and David Stremme. Altobelli and Brandon Hoover won the heats.

Recently unretired Wayne Brenize made his second 2023 start his second 2023 4Cylinder win. Colin Welsh chased him the 12 lap distance, settling for second, ahead of current point leader Josh Corbin. Welsh and Corbin won the heats.
