7.9.22 Wayne County Speedway Results

ORRVILLE – Parity in the Pine Tree Towing and Recovery Sprint Car and Malcuit Tavern Super Late Model divisions has been unmatched this season at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway.
Through the mid-summer point of the season, there had been no repeat winners in “Orrville’s Historic Oval” headlining classes until Saturday night when Henry Malcuit and Ryan Markham joined Colton Shaw in the Elite Ammunition Modifieds, Kyle Moore in the McKenzie Concrete Super Stocks, and Doug Hensel in the JoyRide Mini Stocks, already frequent visitors to WCS victory lane.
Malcuit started his evening by setting quick time and winning the opening heat before lining up fifth in the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association $3,000-to-win main event. Malcuit settled in at the start of the 25-lap feature by following Fremont’s Zeth Sabo, Trey Jacobs, Tyler Street, Andrew Palker, and Jordan Ryan. Sabo’s blistering pace was slowed by a lap seven caution, however, as Malcuit moved into second following Jacobs and Street’s early exit from the event.
Sabo set sail once the green replaced the yellow until a red flag for an upside-down Brayton Phillips on lap 18 halted action. When the field went back under power, Danny Mumaw, who was sixth after starting ninth, and Ryan, who was battling Palker for third, each went pit side as well. Jake Hesson, making a rare appearance in the legendary Ken Bodkins 00, Sprint Car Hall of Famer Danny Smith, and 19th-starting Cody Bova joined the top-six.
Malcuit eventually ran down Sabo, who was suffering from a left rear tire losing air, with two laps to go with a move on the bottom side of turns 1 and 2 to secure his second win in three weeks at WCS. Sabo hung on for second with Palker third, Bova fourth, Hesson fifth, and Smith in sixth.
“I could see (Zeth’s) tire going down under the yellow, and it kind of sucks to win a race like that,” said Malcuit. “But sometimes it takes a little luck in winning races, too, and we’ve been on the bad end of the luck a few times as well.
“My dad (Mark Malcuit) had the car really nice tonight,” Malcuit added, who will now set his sights on action this week at the famed Eldora Speedway. “We need to get some laps and more experience, so we’ll go down there and see what we can do.”
Markham made it a two-for-two weekend after winning the feature on Friday night at Attica Raceway Park by picking up his second win of the 2022 season at WCS over a stout, season-high 26-car field.
JR Gentry, from outside row two, set the early pace in the 25-lap main with Markham, Todd Brennan, Toledo-based driver Rob Anderzack, and last week’s winner Dave Hornikel. Markham cut Gentry’s lead to two car lengths by lap 12, before Gentry stretched his advantage to a straightaway by the 17th circuit before disaster struck the red 14.
Gentry jumped the berm exiting turn 2, getting airborne in the process before crashing into the retaining barriers on the backstretch. Gentry escaped uninjured from his battered machine but was done for the night. Markham inherited the lead and then fended off a valiant charge from Brennan in claiming the victory. Shane McLoughlin finished third followed by Corey Conley, Anderzack, Cody Scott, Northwest Ohio invader Terry Rushlow, Caiden Black, Mitch Caskey, who rallied from deep in the field twice, and Larry Bellman.
Markham will try to make it 3-for-3 Sunday evening at Brush Creek Speedway, before setting his sights on next Sunday’s DirtCar Summer Nationals at WCS. “We will head south (Sunday), then be back here next week for the (DirtCar), so we’ll come over and see what we’ve got. This motor has a lot of laps on it, so we’ll have to see how it goes, but yeah, we will be here.”
Shaw appears primed for next week’s Modified portion of the DirtCar Nationals at WCS, too, as he motored into the lead on lap nine in his familiar orange 01 machine and never looked back.
Shaw grabbed the lead from early leader and newcomer Aaron Phillis, who hung for second, with Casey Butler a strong third, Bill Griffith fourth, and newcomers Brock Moskey and Mark Baier fifth and sixth respectively.
“We can’t seem to re-draw to save our lives,” said the sixth-starting Shaw. “But we were able to move around some and get the win. We’ll also be here next week and see what we got.”
The Mini Stocks were up next, and the season-high 31-car field failed to disappoint the WCS faithful once again.
Hensel, who encountered last-lap mechanical failures while leading each of the last two weeks, took the lead on lap two of the 12-lap main, but once again it was anything but clear sailing for the No. 18 machine. Kyle Petit was the first to challenge Hensel, with last week’s winner Justin Cranmore also in hot pursuit and a hard-charging Chaz Dawson and 25th-starting Anthony Collins in tow.
With victory within sight, Hensel survived a pair of lap 11 yellows, the second coming with Hensel exiting turn 4. Hensel first held off Petit, then a bonsai move from the high-flying Collins in turns 3 and 4 that briefly saw the No. 71 move ahead of Hensel. Collins, though, came up just inches short at the stripe followed by Petit, Dawson, and Ryan Carder.
“We should be standing here with our tenth win of the season, but hey, that’s racing and sometimes that’s the way it goes,” said Hensel. “I admit l was a little nervous on those restarts, but it worked out. We were put to the test tonight.”
Moore continued his domination of the Super Stocks by taking the point on lap four and cruising to his 16th overall victory of the season.
Although Moore was long gone, the action behind the 21D was just heating up. Took Wiles grabbed second after a duel with Braden Tucke. Tyler Wiles entered the fray on lap 12 by taking third, then to the runner-up spot when Took shredded a tire late in the 15-lap feature. Tyler Wiles held on for second ahead of Tucke, Brandon Craver, and early leader Don Rutt.
Wayne County Speedway will sit idle next Saturday before the invasion of the DirtCar Summer Nationals on Sunday evening. The DirtCar Super Late Models and Modifieds will be joined by the WCS Super Stocks. Watch for more information this week on Facebook and Twitter at WCSOhio.
