8.1.14 Albany Saratoga Speedway Results

Malta, NY – It was only a matter of time before Brett Hearn ended his winless streak in the Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified division at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway. That streak came to an end on Friday night when Hearn picked up his first win since June 27th at the fast, four tenths of a mile oval. The win was his seventh of the season.

In other action, Joey Scarborough made a last lap pass on Timothy Davis to pick up the Sportsman division win. Bill Smith held off Robbie Speed for the win in the 25 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event while Rob Maxon and Josh Coonradt won the Limited Sportsman and Street Stock feature events respectfully. Danny Varin won the CRSA RaceSaver Sprint Car Series feature event.

A heavy rain shower just as the gates were opening delayed the start of the program by nearly an hour. Only the Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modifieds were scheduled to run qualifying events with or without the delay.

“We lost the handle on this thing,” Hearn said. “We started the first nine or ten races really good and I think we finally got it back here tonight. I wish I had this Wednesday night. We went back and worked real hard yesterday trying to find out what was going on. I think we found it, we should be good now.”

Matt Delorenzo and Chris Busta led the field to the green with Delorenzo taking the early lead over Busta, Brian Gleason, Jimmy Cottrell and Justin Barber. Cottrell looked good the entire event and on lap one moved past Gleason for third while at the same time Rich Scagliotta relegated Barber to sixth.

Early on Keith Flach had a fast race car. The Ravena, New York racer moved to sixth on lap three and then after Scagliotta took fourth from Gleason on lap four, Flach dropped Gleason from the top five. Hearn though was charging through the field. He took over the sixth position from Gleason on lap six and then fifth from Flach two laps later.

Hearn then set his sights on fourth place runner Scagliotta and within two laps had taken over the spot from his fellow New Jersey resident. As the race approached the midway point, Delorenzo entered heavy slower traffic. On lap 15 as the Cropseyville fan favorite entered traffic second place runner Busta suffered a left rear flat tire. After losing a couple of positions he spun on the backstretch, forcing the races first caution flags on lap 17.

Delorenzo would lead on the restart with Cottrell, Flach, Hearn and Scagliotta following. Hearn regained third from Flach on lap 18 and then immediately took second from Cottrell. A pair of other drivers also began moving towards the front. Kenny Tremont, Jr. started the event from the 14th position right in front of Marc Johnson. Both drivers moved through the field and when Elmo Reckner spun on lap 20 to bring out the races final caution period, they were battling for the fifth position.

When racing resumed Delorenzo had the lead however he also had Hearn all over him. Cottrell held on to the third position while Flach, Tremont and Johnson followed. Johnson overtook Tremont for fifth on lap 21 as Hearn and Delorenzo began what could only be described as an epic battle for the lead. The duo battled back and forth for five laps before Hearn gained control of the top spot.

Meanwhile Flach was starting his own late race charge. He took the third position from Cottrell on lap 25 with Johnson following to fourth soon after. With two laps to go Johnson moved past Flach for third however that is as close as he could get. Hearn pulled away for the win over Delorenzo, Johnson, Flach and Tremont. Heat races for the 22 car field were won by Delorenzo, Cottrell and Flach.

Danny Varin picked up the win in the first appearance of the season by the CRSA RaceSaver Sprint Car Series. Scott Flammer jumped out to the early lead over Chad King and Josh Pieniazek before Bill Jaycox came to a stop up against the inside guardrail. Flammer held the top spot on the restart with Pieniazek and King following.

Art Kiser would spin on lap five forcing another restart. On the restart Flammer would lead Pieniazek and Danny Varin. Varin moved to second on lap ten just before the caution flag waved for Dalton Herrick. On the restart Flammer and Varin battled but Varin ultimately took over. In the end Varin picked up the win over Flammer, King, Pieniazek and Mike Kiser. Heat races for the 23 car field were won by Brittany Tresch, Pieniazek and Warren Alexson.

Joey Scarborough won the 25 lap Sportsman division feature event. The win was the Vermont youngster’s third of the season. Jack Speshock grabbed the early lead and held it until a lap 17 run in with the lapped car of Andy Durie forced him to spin in turn two. This gave the lead to Timothy Davis who held on to the top spot until a spin by Robert Bublak on lap 21 forced a restart.

On the restart Scarborough moved into the second position. On the last lap, heading into turn three Scarborough made a power move around Davis to take the lead. Davis attempted to come back on the low side as they headed into turn four, forcing some contact with Scarborough but it was to no avail as Scarborough brought home the win. Davis finished second with Derrick McGrew third, Hunter Bates fourth and Dave Baranowski, Jr. fifth. A total of 30 cars entered the event.

Bill Smith picked up the DIRTcar Pro Stock 25 lap feature event. Brandon Emigh led early before giving way to Smith on lap two. Smith held off a hard charging Robbie Speed to bring home the win. Speed settled for second with Kenny Martin, Jr. third, Jeff Washburn fourth and Emigh fifth. A total of 17 drivers entered the event.

Rob Maxon won his third career Limited Sportsman feature event. He will now be moved up into the Sportsman division. Maxon brought home the win over Ken Conroy, Shannon Donnelly, Jesse Edwards and Jack Bublak. A total of 20 drivers entered the event.

Josh Coonradt won the 20 lap Don Don’s Delights Street Stock feature event. The win was his third of the season. Randy Miller finished second with Jason Meltz third, Scott Lawrence fourth and Paul Braymer fifth. A total of 19 Street Stocks were on hand.
