SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Robbie Stillwaggon of Burlington, N.J. powered to his first win of the season in the second annual Selinsgrove Ford Kramer Cup for 360 sprint cars Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway.
The $2,573 victory, at the wheel of the Quality Auto Body No. 89, marked Stillwaggon’s second career at the track in the United Racing Club sanctioned event that was a tribute to the late Hall of Fame sprint car driver and former Selinsgrove champion Kramer Williamson.
A stray shower at 7 p.m. caused a nearly three-hour delay to the start of Saturday night’s racing program which was spun off at a fast pace once the first green flag waved about 10 p.m. with a big crowd and strong field of race cars in attendance.
Coleby Frye of Dover scored his first win of the season at Selinsgrove by just half of a second over Dave Zona of Montrose in the 25-lap super late model feature.
Brad Mitch of McClure drove to his third win of the year in the 15-lap pro stock feature.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present a four division racing show featuring the 360 sprint cars, super late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners on Reinhart Food Service Night at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. The Eastern Museum of Motor Racing will also have a classic race car display set up behind the covered grandstand prior to the start of Saturday’s show. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.
With URC sprint regulars Curt Michael and Robbie Stillwaggon sharing the front row for the start of the Kramer Cup, Stillwaggon pulled into the early lead and quickly showed he had a capable race car. With five laps down, Stillwaggon set a torrid pace on the lightning-quick speedway over Michael, fourth-place starter TJ Stutts, sixth-place starter Mark Smith, and third-place starter Derek Locke.
Stutts stormed into the runner up position a lap later and completed a pass for the lead only to have it called back when the caution flag unfurled on lap seven. When the race resumed, Stillwaggon kept the field at bay as eighth-place starter Aaron Ott began to show a lot of speed.
The red flag waved on lap 13 when Jason Clauss’ car had a rear wheel break loose, causing the car to go into a wild spin and flip over on the frontstretch. Clauss escaped injury. An intense five-car battle unfolded at the front of the track between Stillwaggon, Stutts, Smith, Ott, and fifth-place starter Davie Franek when the race resumed.
The caution flag slowed the field again on lap 17 when Colby Womer’s car rolled to a stop in turn four. When the green flag waved, Smith horsepowered his way into the runner up position and attempted to reel in Stillwaggon. At the checkered flag, Stillwaggon was victorious by 2.8 seconds over Smith, Stutts, Ott, and Franek.
Polesitter Danny Snyder led the first three laps of the super late model feature until sixth-place starter Coleby Frye stormed into the lead with an inside pass in turn four. Early in the race, Frye set the pace in front of fifth-place starter Tony Adams, eighth-place starter Dave Zona, and 10th-place starter Jeff Rine in the lead pack.
Zona advanced to second on the eighth circuit and by the halfway point, Rine moved into the third spot with 15th-place starter Dylan Yoder racing in fourth. Steve Campbell, who started 12th, worked his way into the top five, only to develop a flat tire on the 15th circuit.
With four laps to go, Frye drifted high in turn four, almost allowing Zona to drive underneath him for the lead to no avail. On the final lap, Frye held off Zona by just .48 of a second for the win. Rine, Yoder, and Kenny Trevitz completed the top five.
Polesitter Matt Wilson powered into the lead at the start of the pro stock feature and was chased by fourth-place starter Brandon Moser. On the second circuit, eighth-place starter Brad Mitch drove into the runner-up position and set his sights on the leader.
Mitch made the winning pass on the fifth lap and never looked back. During the second half of the race, fifth-place starter Dave Brouse Jr. and 15th-place starter Nathan long dueled for the runner up position.
At the checkered flag, Mitch’s margin of victory was 3.7 seconds over Brouse. Long crossed the line in third but was disqualified when his car failed a post-race technical inspection. Wilson was awarded third, followed by Andrew Shoop and Matt Hornberger in the top five.
