ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 8/19/2015 – For the throngs of race fans who turned out to Lincoln to see 4-foot, 4-inch Rico Abreu Wednesday night, he did not disappoint.

“That was pretty damn cool right there!” exclaimed Abreu after claiming his second USAC/ARDC win in as many nights as part of the Honda Midget Series “Eastern Storm” swing, “They packed the track in and that helped out a bunch. That was a pretty cool race to be driving.’

For most of the race, it looked like Abreu would have to rally to make the podium, as Jerry Coons, Jr. and Bryan Clauson waged a duel for the lead over the first 28 laps.

But the final laps were beyond description, with fifth-starting Abreu assuming third when teammate Christopher Bell spun in turns three and four with five laps to go.

On the 26th lap restart, Clauson got past Coons for the lead. A lap later, Coons (who led laps 1-13 and 16-25) began to fade, opening the door for a charging Abreu with four laps to go.

Abreu then took to the cushion to pass Clauson for the race lead on lap 29, and hung on for the crowd-pleasing win.

“I know it’s tough here leading. I went through the same scenario last night of just not knowing where to go. He got by Jerry and then went low. That left a clean lane up there,” said Abreu of the race-winning pass, “He’s a good enough driver to race me clean, and we get great racing like that. I just dragged raced him down into one. The top kinda got burned in there and I got my momentum going up there. It was exciting!”

He picked up $3,500 for the win, with Clauson settling for second, Tracy Hines coming from eighth to finish third, tenth-starting Kevin Thomas, Jr. fourth, and 12th-starting Alex Bright fifth. Sixth through tenth were Coons, Steve Buckwalter, Spencer Bayston, Tyler Thomas, and Brandon Bright.

“I’m having a lot of fun here in Pennsylvania,” continued Abreu, “I think it’s great USAC is now coming to Pennsylvania. I know there’s a lot of great race tracks here. It shows tonight with the great racing. I thank the fans for coming out. I know it’s a weekday, but it looks like a great crowd to me.”

Heats for the USAC Midgets were won by Steve Buckwalter, Coons, Tyler Thomas, Jr., and Christopher Bell, with Trevor Kobylarz winning the consolation.

Clauson set a new track record over the 31-car field in time trials, turning a lap of 15.804 seconds (85.421 miles per hour).

Spring Grove’s Harlon Leppo became the fifth leader on lap 18 and went on to win the 20-lap Central PA Legends feature.

Leppo started third but watched polesitter Mason Chaney led the first three laps and Travis McClelland lead lap four. He then led the next 11 laps before McClelland slid under Leppo for the lead in turn two of lap 17. One lap later, Leppo made an identical move to re-take the lead, and crossed 1.12 seconds in front of McClelland at the end.

Bill Diehl caught Bob Stough at the start-finish line to finish third, with Stough and Chaney completing the top five.

Heats for the 27 Central PA Legends on hand were won by Chaney, McClelland, and Leppo, with Rick Hartwig winning the consolation.

This Saturday night, August 22nd, it will be the second of two BAPS Family Night of the season. The 410 and 358 sprint cars return to the Pigeon Hills, and will be joined by the All-American Outlaws.
Gates for the show open at 5:30 p.m., with racing action scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
