8.2.19 Lakeside Speedway Results

Lakeside Speedway welcomed 113 drivers and race teams for opening night of the 2019 race season. The night’s race program marked the first since the devastating flood waters took over the speedway last spring. After several weeks of cleanup and recovery, fans were treated to 21 total races, which included 14 preliminary heats and 7 main events.

Prior to the night’s race program getting under way, several personnel were recognized for their efforts in whipping the track back into shape after the floodwaters retreated. Those recognized included General Manager Pete Howey, Track Prep Man Jim ‘Bunny’ Whistler, Grounds and Maintenance men Danny Kalina and Jason Cochran, and volunteers Lowell Christy and Don Johnson. Howey also recognized the fire and safety crew and the safety and two crew for their efforts and dedication.

In addition to the recognition, a moment of silence was held for drivers and personnel who passed away prior to racing this year. Those recognized included Stock Car driver Doug Richards, Late Model driver Joe Wallace, Pure Stock Driver Cletus Murray, B-Mod driver Mike Tanner, and engine builder Don Burlington. The ‘Queen of Kansas City Racing’ Joan Ellis waived the initial green flag from the suites to get the program underway!

Pure Stock Recap (15 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Krew Walburn, Ron Hill, Marshall Jewett. Heat Race Two Top Three: Jason Ryun, David Nickel, Matthew Matsukevich. Main Event Recap: Jason Ryun and Krew Walburn began the second half of the program on the front row of the night’s first main event. Ryun led early until Jewett pulled close by lap three and eventually moving to the front on lap four. At the halfway point, Jewett remained out front with Ryun close by as the caution waived for the first time. When racing resumed, Ryun continued to hound Jewett for the lead but on this night, Jewett was too strong and pulled away for the win after a late-race caution. Ryun finished second just in front of a strong run by Ron Hill in third. Krew Walburn fought hard for a top-five run coming home in fourth, just ahead of David Nickel in fifth.

E-Mod Recap (14 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Tony Barnhart, Shawn Burns, Adam Schelert. Heat Race Two Top Three: Jessie Mulich, Trevor Hand, Buz Kaster. Main Event Recap: Jessie Mulich and Shawn Burns led the E-Mod contingent to the initial green flag of the 15-lap feature. Mulich, of Bonner Springs, Kansas shot out to an early lead with Shawn Burns and Trevor Hand in tow. Mulich was comfortably in command for the first half of the race until lap seven when Trevor Hand pulled up to challenge and ultimately take the lead on lap eight. Hand pulled away over the final circuits leading the distance in front of a fierce battle for second between Mulich, Burns, and Steven Makar. Just as the white flag was about to fly, the yellow flag was thrown for a slowing car on the track. On the restart, Hand led Mulich, Burns, Makar, and Buz Kaster for a green, white, and checkered flag finish. Burns was strong on the restart and took over second with one lap remaining, but the white flag flew again for spun car low in turn three. Eventually, Hand went on to take his first-ever E-Mod at Lakeside over Burns, Kaster, Mulich, and Makar. Unfortunately, post-race technical inspection led to the disqualification of Hand and Mulich from the finish, meaning that Shawn Burns was the race winner. Kaster finished second, Makar third, Adam Schelert fourth, John Snyder inside the top five.

Grand Nationals Recap (4 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Terry Bivins, Don Marrs, Marshall Jewett. Main Event Recap: Grand Nationals did not compete in a main event.

Mod-Lite Recap (17 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Dillon Raffurty, David Raffurty, Jeff Raffurty. Heat Race Two Top Three: Travis Alexander, Cody Miller, Justin Raffurty. Main Event Recap: Son and Father Dillon Raffurty and David Raffurty set sail from the front row of the night’s 12-lap main event. David Raffurty took the early lead, but it didn’t take long for Dillon Raffurty to move to the front of the field. David stayed close for a few laps before Dillon began to pull away. David Raffurty ran strong in second with Justin Raffurty and Cody Miller in a close battle for third. Lap-after-lap, Miller battled with Justin Raffurty for third and eventually pulled forward to battle David Raffurty for second. At the lap-nine marker, Dillon continued to lead Father David, and Cody Miller, still locked into their classic runner-up battle. As Dillon checked out for the eventual victory, David Raffurty and Miller battled right to the finish with David taking second and Miller third. Justin Raffurty, Travis Alexander, and Michael Raffurty completed the top six.

Stock Car Recap (18 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Austin O’Neal, Kevin Anderson, Gary Donaldson. Heat Race Two Top Three: Tim Shields, Kacey Shields, David Oxford. Main Event Recap: Austin O’Neal and Tim Shields led the field to the green for the 15-lap Stock Car main event with the leaders jumbling it up at the start as O’Neal collected the wall in turn three and unfortunately retiring from the event. After a complete restart, Kevin Anderson and Tim Shields along with Steve Herrick ran at the front. Cautions flew early before the drivers settled into a race rhythm as Anderson continued to lead. By lap 13, Gary Donaldson closed in and it was a five-car race up front right to the finish. Donaldson had a strong run off turn two and took command of the event by the time the field came around to take the white flag. Tim Shields and Kevin Anderson ran close for second down the back stretch on the final lap behind Donaldson trying to sort out second. When the five cars came off turn four it was Donaldson who collected the victory. Kevin Anderson finished second at the line over Tim Shields, Kacey Shields, Steve Herrick and Thomas Ground.

B-Mod Recap (27 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Tim Powell, Andy Bryant, Jake Richards. Heat Race Two Top Three: J.C. Morton, Clint Johnson, Chad Walker. Heat Race Three Top Three: Shadren Turner, Patrick Royalty, Blake Pierce. Main Event Recap: Andy Bryant earned the pole starting position along with Joplin, Missouri’s Clint Johnson to lead the field to the 20-lap B-Mod feature. This event was a thriller with several changes of positions inside the top five in the opening laps. Patrick Royalty led early with Bryant and Johnson in two. At lap three, Bryant was the leader ahead of Royalty. Bryant continued to lead through lap five as J.C. Morton split Bryant and Royalty at the front of the field in turn one to take command of the race. Behind Morton, Royalty took second from Bryant at lap seven with Bryant, Johnson, and Tim Powell inside the top five. Caution flew by lap 11 with Morton on the throttle to keep his lead over Bryant, who regained the second spot on the restart. At the lap fifteen point, Morton pulled away with Bryant Royalty, Johnson, Powell, and now Jake Richards trying to stay close. Caution flew for a final time on lap 16 and Bryant did all he could to reel in Morton on the restart pulling to the side of Morton, but on this night, Morton was too strong and pulled away for the win. Bryant finished in a strong second over Johnson in third, Richards took fourth at the finish ahead of Powell in fifth and Royalty in sixth.

A-Mod Recap (18 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Tyler Wolff, Mark Schafman, Chad Lyle. Heat Race Two Top Three: Nic Bidinger, Darron Fuqua, Tim Karrick. Main Event Recap: The final event of the night was the 20-lap main event for the A-Mods. Former Champion Mark Schafman and Arkansas’ Tyler Wolff led the field to the green flag. Wolff took command early on with Schafman, Nic Bidinger and Darron Fuqua giving chase. At lap seven, the yellow flag flew with Wolff leading Fuqua and Schafman on the restart. Fuqua was strong on the restart and was the new race leader by lap eight with Wolff to second. Chad Lyle came to life by lap nine and challenged for second with Wolff, Karrick, and Schafman close. Yellow flew again at lap 13 for a single-car spin as Fuqua continued to lead over Wolff, Lyle, and Karrick. Fuqua looked to carry his momentum and strong run to the checkers but heartbreak strike on lap 18 just two laps from the finish as he was unable to complete the race. Karrick’s strong run was brought to a halt on lap 18 as his car slowed with a flat tire. Wolff regained the lead after Fuqua’s demise and eventually went on to take the victory ahead of Lyle in second, Terry Schultz came to life late for third ahead of Schafman, Bidinger, and Kerry Davis inside the top six.
