The heat was on at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Saturday evening, as the fastest cars on dirt would invade the Monster Half-Mile for Falconi’s Automotive 410 Outlaw Winged Sprint Car Series. It was the second time this season that the 410 Winged Sprints would be on the card at PPMS, only to be rained out in their first attempt earlier in the season. Mother nature would cooperate on Saturday evening and the show would go on as planned. PPMS would see qualifying, seven heat races, and seven feature events.
Sye Lynch (42), from Apollo, would pass Brandon Matus (13), from Wampum, on the last lap to pick up the win in the Falconi’s Automotive 410 Outlaw Winged Sprint Car Feature. Justin Shea (14S), from Sharpsville, would pick up another win in the RUSH Sportsman Modified Feature, while Ben Policz (14B), from Rices Landing, would pick up another win for the Rohrich RUSH Late Model Dirt Series. Brain Huchko (60H), from McDonald, would get another win in the ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stock Feature. Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, would pick up win number five for the Priority Equipment Rental Hobby Stocks. Bill Tennant (2), from Colliers, West Virginia, would continue his winning ways for the Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinders, and Travis Clark (05), from Pittsburgh, would pick up his second win in the All Ways Safe Young Guns Feature.
During qualifying for the Falconi’s Automotive 410 Outlaw Winged Sprint Cars, Lynch (42) would set the fast time of 15.538. Lynch (42) was the only driver to qualify in the 15-second range. The Winged Sprints were broken into two heat races with all of the cars from the first heat making the redraw to determine the starting order for the 20-lap feature. Brandon Matus (13) would redraw number one, making him the pole-sitter. Starting to his outside was Russ Sansosti (23S), from Youngstown, Ohio. Making up the second row was Dan Kuriger (08), from Freedom, and Lynch (42). Matt Sherlock (55), from Beaver Falls, would start in fifth, and Brandon Spithaler (22), from Renfew, would complete the top three starting rows. When the green flag dropped, the pack would go thundering into turn one. As the field came out of turn two, Matus (13) would have the early lead. Matus (13), Kuriger (08), and Lynch (42) would run one, two, and three through lap four. By lap five, the trio would already enter lapped traffic. The trio would run in tandem sticking to the high side of the track through lap 15. With five laps remaining, the top three would continue to stick together. With the race going green to checkered in record fashion, it appeared that Matus (13) had the win in the bag. But, Lynch (42) got a nice run coming out of turns three and four and was able to pass Matus (13) to steal the win by six one-hundredths of a second. “ I just tried to reel him in one last time and get a good run on the 08 and an opportunity came up in three and four, and I know it was tight there but I’ve wanted to win here for so long it’s crazy. This track means a lot to my family. I’ve been so close. I’ve had so many seconds, so many thirds, but the first win here is pretty special.” Matus (13) would finish in a close second, Kuriger (08) in third, Spithaler (22) in fourth, Darrin Gallagher (12) in fifth, Sansosti (23S) in sixth, Brent Matus (33) in seventh, Sherlock (55) in eighth, Steve Bright (13B) in ninth, George Fredricks (22F) in tenth, and Davey Jones (76) would complete the 11-car field. The heat race winners were Lynch (42) and Gallagher (12).
In the RUSH Sportsman Modified 15-lap feature, Tony Tatgenhorst (63T), from Columbiana, Ohio, would start on the pole. JC Boyer (12), from Burghill, Ohio, would start to his inside in second place. Justin Shea (14S) would start in third, while Jacob Jordan (28J), from Aliquippa, would start in fourth, Chelsea Kreigisch (10), from Ellwood City, would start in fifth, and Joe Gibson (119), from Chicora, would round out the six-car field. When the green flag waved, the field would go two and three wide heading into turn one. Shea (14S) would come from his fourth-place starting spot and take the lead on lap one. Lap two had Shea (14S) still leading, Tatgenhorst (63T) in second, Boyer (12) in third, Jordan (28J) in fourth, Kreigisch (10) in fifth, and Gibson (119) in sixth. The field would remain the same through lap four with Shea (14S) beginning to distance himself from the field. Gibson (119) would enter the pits with an unknown car issue. The race would run caution-free and Shea (14S) would lead all laps of the event. Picking up another PPMS RUSH Sportsman Modified win. He was followed to the line by Tatgenhorst (63T) in second, Boyer (12) in third, Jordan (28J) in fourth, Kreigisch (10) in fifth, and Gibson (119) in sixth. Shea (14S) was the heat race winner.
The Rohrich RUSH Late Models had 16 cars signed in. They were broken into two heat races with the top four from each heat making the redraw. In their 20-lap Feature, Philip Bubeck (2L), from Colliers, West Virginia, would start on the pole. Ben Policz (14B) would start to his outside in second place. Daryl Charlier (114), from Midway, would start in third, Bill Kessler (09), from Freedom, would start in fourth, Chris Lander (18), from Burgettstown, would start in fifth, and Tim Shaffer (45), from Aliquippa, would complete the top three starting rows. When the green flag dropped, Policz (14B) would grab the early lead with Charlier (114) following him into second place, and Bubeck (2B) falling to third. Lap four had the top three the same with Kessler (09) in fourth, and last week’s winner, Cole Petrelle (84) in fifth. The top five would remain the same through lap six. Policz (14B) and Charlier (114) would enter lapped traffic on lap eight, and Policz (14B) would use the lapped traffic to try and distance himself from Charlier (114). Charlier (114) would begin the reel Policz (14B) back in on lap 11. Charlier (114) would get the break he was looking for on lap 12 when the caution came out when Bubeck (2B) spun out coming out of turn four. Policz (14B) would choose the outside on the restart with Charlier (114) to his inside. Kessler (09) was in third, Petrelle (84) in fourth, and Shaffer (45) in fifth. When green replaced yellow, Policz (14B) would keep his lead with Charlier (114) in tow. With eight laps remaining in the event, Charlier (114) would battle hard to take over the lead, but Policz (14B) would fend him off keeping his lead. Policz (14B) would lead all laps of the event to pick up another Rohrich RUSH Late Model win. “ It feels good to be back. I mean, that was a hell of a race. Shawn was giving me signals and I wasn’t pulling anything, so it was every single lap. It was just if I was off a little bit I’d see that he was closing in. And the with Lander spinning, I didn’t know if they were going to throw the caution or what we were going to do but we picked it up and that’s all that matters.” Following Policz (14B) to the line was Charlier (114) in second, Petrelle (84) in third, Shaffer (45) in fourth, Kessler (09) in fifth, Tom Klein (77) in sixth, Tom Duratz (55D) in seventh, Tony White (27T) in eighth, Bubeck (2) in ninth, and Dan Lepro (2L) in tenth. The heat race winners were Charlier (114) and Shaffer (45).
In the ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stock 15-lap Feature, Brian Huchko (60H) would start on the pole with Mike Harris (18), from Bridgeville to his inside in second place. Nick Kocuba (10), from Burgettstown, would start in third, and Chase Lambert (22), from Mars, would complete the top two starting rows. When the green flag waved, Huchko (60H), Kocuba (10), and Lambert (22) would drag race into turns one and two. Huchko (60H) would have the lead at the line with Lambert (22) in second and Kocuba (10) in third. Lap three had Huchko (60H) still leading, Lambert (22) in second, Kocuba (10) in third, and A.J. Poljak (36) in fourth. Lambert (22) would fall to fourth on lap five, and the event’s first caution would come on that same lap five for debris in turn two. During the caution, Kocuba (10) would enter the pits with a flat tire. He would have the tire changed and make it back out to tag the field before the green flag. Huchko (60H) would keep his lead when the field returned to green-flag conditions. Lap eight had Huchko (60H) leading the field, Harris (18) in second, Lamber (22) in third, and Kocuba (10) in fourth. By lap 11, Huchko (60H) had a full straightaway lead over the field. Huchko (60H) would dominate the event and pick up another ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stock win with a seven-second advantage over the field. Following him to the line was Harris (18) in second, Kocuba (10) in third, Lambert (22) in fourth, Jacob Billyk (4) in fifth, Jackson Billyk (5) in sixth, Poljak (36) in seventh, Jacob Billyk (4JR) in eighth, and Tanya Charlier (21) would round out the nine-car field. The Pro Stocks did not run a heat race.
The Priority Equipment Rental Hobby Stocks are quickly becoming a premier division at PPMS and they certainly did not disappoint on Saturday evening. 22 Hobby Stocks were signed in and they were broken into two heat races with the top five from each heat making the redraw. Tyler Fox (39F), from Pittsburgh, would be the lucky dog and start on the pole. Danny Rich (221K), from Imperial, would start to his outside in second place. John Cain (06), from North Versailles, would start in third, while Frank Magill (05) would start in fourth, Kayla McManus (00K) would start in fifth, and Stephen Shelpman (17S) would start in sixth. When the green light turned on, the field would go three and four wide into turn one with a battle for the lead. Fox (39F) would come out on top with the early lead. On lap two, F. Magill (05) would challenge Fox (39F) for the lead on the back-stretch. The duo would battle for the lead heading into turns one and two. F. Magill (05) would throw an awesome slide job on Fox (39F) coming out of turn two to take over the lead. Lap four had F. Magill (05) still leading, Fox (39F) in second, Shelpman (17S) in third, Danny Rich (221K) in fourth, and Tony Magill (5) in fifth. The top five would remain the same through lap nine when Matt Benard would challenge T. Magill (5) for fifth place. The pair would battle for fifth on laps nine and ten with Benard (15) taking it. The front runners would enter lapped traffic on lap 10. T. Magill (05), Fox (39F), and Shelpman (17S) would run one, two, and three through lap 11. T. Magill (05) would go the distance to pick up his fifth Hobby Stock win of the season, as he led all laps of the caution-free 15-lap event. He was followed to the line by Fox (39F) in second, Shelpman (17S) in third, Rich (221k) in fourth, Benard (15) in fifth, T. Magill (5) in sixth, McManus (00k) in seventh, Gary Koteles (1K) in eighth, Chloie Jones (76) in ninth, and Ben Anton (13) would complete the top 10. The heat race winners were Shelpman (17S) and Rich (221K).
The Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinders had eight cars signed in and only ran a 12-lap feature. Without a heat race and redraw, their initial pill draw would determine their starting spots in the feature. Derek Quigley (65Q), from Roscoe, would be the pole-sitter. Starting to his outside in second place was Lucas Weaver (11W), from California, Pennsylvania. Justin Pellegrini (29P), from Finleyville, would start in third, Bill Tennant (2) would start in fourth, while Hemi Kineston (05) would start in fifth, Noah Bubeck (2B) would start in sixth, Eric Reynolds (53) would start in seventh, and Craig Rudolph (5R) would complete the eight-car field. When the green flag dropped, Weaver (11W) would take the early lead, while Tennant (2) made a move for second place in turns three and four. The event’s first caution would come on lap two when Rudolph (5R) spun out in turn two. Weaver (11W) would choose the outside on the restart with Quigley (65Q) to his inside. When green replaced yellow, Tenant (2) would steal the lead with N. Bubeck (2B) following him into second place. Lap four had Tennant (2) still leading, N. Bubeck (2B) still in second, Weaver (11W) in third, and Quigley (65Q) in fourth. The top four would remain the same through lap 11 until Quigley (65) lost a wheel between turns three and four causing him to spin out and hit a pole at the turn four pit entrance bringing out the caution. Tennant (2) would choose the outside on the restart with N. Bubeck (2B) to his inside. With a two-lap shootout, Tennant (2) would keep his lead. Tennant (2) would lead the remaining two laps of the event to pick up another Four-Cylinder win. He was followed to the line by N. Bubeck (2B) in second, Kineston (05) in third, Weaver (11W) in fourth, Pellegrini (29P) in fifth, Reynolds (53) in sixth, Rudolph (5R) in seventh, and Quigley (65Q) in eighth. The Four-Cylinders did not run a heat race.
The Always Safe Young Guns eight-lap feature had seven cars in the field. Cameron Lambert (223) from Mars, would be the pole-sitter. Gavin Kokolis (91), from Oakdale, would start to his outside in second place. Emmerson Laboon, from Elizabeth, would start in third, while Sadie Snatchko (56), from Oakdale, started in fourth, Travis Clark (05), from Pittsburgh, started in fifth, Logan Koteles (5K), from Stockdale, started in sixth, and Cameron Hollister (44), from McDonald, would start in seventh, rounding out the field. When the green flag waved, track officials threw the caution and called a no-start. The field would line up again and give it another try. When the green flag waved this time, Lambert (223) would keep the lead, but a caution would come out before the field completed the first lap when Laboon (14) and Hollister (44) would make incidental contact between turns one and two. Since the Young Guns are a no-contact division, the pair were warned by track officials. A complete restart would ensue and when green replaced yellow, Lambert (223) would again keep the lead. Lap one had Lambert (223) still leading, L. Koteles (5K) now in second, Hollister (44) now in third, and Clark (05) now in fourth. Hollister (44) would battle Lambert (223) for the lead on lap two. Hollister (44) would have the lead at the line knocking Lambert (223) back to second. L. Koteles (5K) and Clark (05) would both pass Lambert (223) on lap three for second and third place respectively with Hollister (44) still leading. On lap four, Clark (05) would make his move for second and first place in one lap. He started his charge to the front in turn two and completed it in turns three and four staying to the high side of the track. Clark (05) would lead the remaining four laps of the event to pick up another Young Guns win. He was followed to the line by Hollister (44) in second, L. Koteles (5K) in third, Lambert (223) in fourth, Laboon (14) in fifth, Kokolis (91) in sixth, and Snatchko (56) in seventh. The Young Guns did not run a heat race.
Racing resumes at Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile this coming Saturday, August 28, 2021, for an Action Event featuring the Rohrich RUSH Late Model Dirt Series, the ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, the Priority Equipment Rental Hobby Stocks, the Crawford Auto Four-Cylinders, and the All Ways Safe Young Guns.
