8.28.20 Red Clay Late Model Series Results

Friday night we made our first trip to West Georgia speedway for night one of the KRC Power Steering Triple Crown presented by Lee’s Tree Service and Jeff Smith Racing. Despite the remittent of Hurricane Laura blowing through we still had 18 cars sign-in for the evening. The drivers decided in the drivers meeting to forgo heat races to save time and try and help beat the rain in the area. They decided group A would be the inside lane and Group B would be the outside.
Matt Steward set fast time in Group A with a lap of 15.452 but it was Seth Wimpy setting fast time overall and in Group B with a blistering lap of 15.174 around the West Georgia Speedway. This earned him the Converter Man fast time award and made him eligible for another $100 bonus if he went on to win the race.

Steward and Wimpey brought the field to green flag with Wimpy getting the lead off 2 and running away into another zip code as he continued the blistering pace that he set in qualifying. Matt Steward, Jake Green and Matthew Knight stayed nose to tail until they encroached on lapped traffic and then it got interesting as the trio weaved their way through traffic. Matthew Knight made it interesting as he made several attempts to pass Green on the high side but was denied as either a lap car or green would close the door. All the while green was applying pressure to steward but could not capitalize on lap traffic. The first caution came out on lap 14 for a spin in turn one. This caution lead to a big pile up on the restart, this caution saw several cars leave the race. Steward would benefit from this red flag as wimpy would retreat to the pits with a flat right rear flat. Wimpey started at the end of the lead lap cars on the restart and Steward would strike out to a couple car lengths until green and Knight would begin to apply pressure in the closing laps but Knight would succumb to Wimpy as he was a man on a mission and rallied to a third place finish. Steward picked up his second win of the season and extended his points lead in overall standing and the Commercial Dock and Door Rookie of the Year points.
