8.3.18 Lakeside Speedway Results

It was a thrilling night for the next-generation of race fans for Kid’s Night presented by Travelers Protection Agency at Lakeside Speedway. The pit area filled with 105 drivers in the seven competing divisions with 14 USRA Modifieds, 29 USRA B-Mods, 15 USRA Stock Cars, 18 E-Mods, 16 guest class Mod-Lites, 7 Grand Nationals, and 6 Factory Stocks.

Preliminary events recap: The night began with qualifying heat races in all divisions as drivers were in pursuit of main event starting-grid positions. Marshall Jewett took command in the Factory Stocks with Lane Chew finishing runner-up to kick off the heat races. Kacey Shields collected the Grand National victory with Dennis Melvin posting a strong second. Steven Makar sailed away in the first E-Mod heat to collect the win as Tim Billings advanced to second. Ben Stockton continued his strong season and drove to the victory in heat two ahead of Shawn Burns. In the guest class Mod-Lites, Jeff Raffurty outdistanced Travis Alexander for the win while in the second heat, father and son duo Dillon Raffurty and David Raffurty finished one-two.

For the Smokin’ Hot Summer Series USRA Divisions, the Factory Stocks continued the heat-races as Jake Newman drove from the back to the front and collected the opening heat win over Jaylen Wettengel. ‘Coach’ Kevin Anderson was victorious in heat two as he took the win over Cletus Murray. Blake Pierce commanded the opening B-Mod heat and took the win over Luke Nieman while Andy Bryant dominated heat two for the victory with Austin Charles finishing second. In heat three Brad Smith was strong and came away with the victory ahead of Jayden Bears. The final B-Mod heat went to Tim Powell with a new power-plant under the hood as he bested Dustin Crist. USRA Modifieds completed the heat races for the night with a pair of events as Justin Johnson easily collected the opening heat victory over Kerry Davis. The final heat went to former champion Nic Bidinger with Gunner Martin finishing second.

Main events recap: After an exciting intermission break in which the Kid’s Night activities took the spotlight for foot races on the track, bike giveaways and bus rides around the track, Factory Stocks returned to kick off the main events. After an early race caution eliminated Marshall Jewett from the field, Wayne Brooke took over the top spot in the 10-lap main event and never looked back as he went on to claim his first-ever feature event by fending off a strong run by Matthew Matsukevich, Jeff Siler, and Lane Chew. After a difficult start, the Grand National drivers finally settled into a race rhythm for their 10-lap main event with Don Marrs emerging as the winner over Terry Bivins, Kacey Shields, and Dennis Melvin, Sr. In the 15-lap E-Mod main, Ben Stockton set the early pace until Tim Billings closed in by lap five. At the lap nine marker, Billy Spilman made his way to second and eventually took the lead on lap ten, going on to his 10th main-event win of the year over Stockton, Billings, and Steven Makar. Dillon Raffurty and Travis Alexander showed the way at the start of the 12-lap Mod-Lite main event but it was Raffurty who grabbed the lead and never looked back as he went on to collect his fourth Lakeside victory of the season and 15th overall for the year over , Alexander, Justin Raffurty, and David Raffurty.

The Smokin’ Hot Summer Series USRA cars then returned to the track for their main events with USRA Stock Cars up for their 15-lap feature event. After an early yellow flag, Tim Shields grabbed the lead until another yellow-flag restart saw twelfth-starting Brett Heeter grab the point. In the late stages of the race Heeter pulled away with Kevin Anderson also breaking free into second. Despite heavy contact with the wall coming for the checkered flag due to mechanical issues, Heeter went on to collect his eighth win of the year ahead of Anderson, Shields, and Jaylen Wettengel.

Blake Pierce and Andy Bryant started the USRA B-Mod 20-lap main event on row one and the pair were strong early until Tim Powell moved forward. Bryant pulled out of contention by lap four as Pierce put pressure on Powell at the front by lap seven on the high side. Pierce grabbed the lead by lap nine but Powell returned the favor the next lap and went on to collect his eighth win of the season over Pierce’s outstanding run to second. Patrick Royalty and Brad Smith were third and fourth.

USRA Modifieds closed out the exciting night with their 20-lap main event with Lucas Gibbs and Gunner Martin showing the way to start the race. Martin led early on until Schafman showed a burst of speed into turn one, grabbing the lead. After a lap-five caution, Nic Bidinger came into the picture in a classic battle with Martin for second. Mark Dotson also advanced forward by lap nine but misfortune struck Dotson a couple laps later as he contacted the wall off turn four causing him to drastically slow down the front stretch, leaving Martin nowhere to go as the two made heavy contact. Both drivers were okay and Martin later returned to the race after repairs as Dotson was forced to retire. When the race resumed Kerry Davis was the man on the move behind Schafman and Bidinger as he advanced to third. In the end, Schafman claimed his second feature win of the year holding off Bidinger, Davis, and Justin Johnson.
