8.30.19 Fayetteville Motor Speedway Results

Willie Milliken became the sixth winner in as many I-95 Late Model Challenge Series races and tightened the points race with a dominant 35-lap win at Fayetteville Motor Speedway on Friday night.

The resident of Roanoke Rapids qualified second to Shaun Harrell of Gray’s Creek, then zipped out to the lead when the green flag flew and was never threatened. Only one caution slowed Milliken’s grip on a $2,500 payday.

“I tried to time Shaun, but it was just … I think I got a little bit better roll on him than I should have and I might’ve beat him to the line just a little bit,” Milliken said. “I pretty much jumped a little bit, but they didn’t call it back, so I just kept my foot in it ’til they told me to back off — and they never did.

“I didn’t hear ‘em a lot, just right after the restarts for a lap or so, and then they’d start fading out,” he added. “My wife was giving me signals, and I noticed when she threw her arms out a good distance, I started kind of riding through the corners and just letting the car run like asphalt, not bending it as much. And I noticed it got faster and faster. I slowed down and got faster.”

Finishing third was the winner of the I-95 race at Fayetteville on May 25, Delaware driver Robbie Emory. Local driver Timmy Blackwell took fourth, and Matthew Bissette of Middlesex was fifth.

Rocky Mount’s Michael Batten retained the three-track series’ points lead with 134 unofficial points heading into Saturday night’s race at County Line Raceway in Elm City. Milliken moved from fourth to second with 121, Bissette is third with 120, Harrell improved to 119, and Wilson’s Michael Rouse rounds out the top five at 116.

After the County Line event, the series has only two more shows on tap: Sept. 21 at Fayetteville and Oct. 18-19 at County Line.

In Diet Mountain Dew Modified action, Daniel Parker emerged victorious in a race-long battle with Christian Thomas, and David Taylor took third.

Eric Bentley won the SportModz feature over Jerry Dove and Jason Floyd.

Eddie Daniels dashed to another win in Legends over Daniel Ridenhour and Ryan Shabram, the early leader who overcame a spin to rally to third.

Benji Thompson earned the checkered flag in Sportsman by .58 seconds over Ron Pope, and David Royal finished third.

In Renegades action, Brandon Carter got to the finish line 1.5 seconds ahead of Rick Razillard, and Case Daniels claimed third. The race was the first in a five-race “Blitz” series in which event winners pocket $500, as will the mini-series champ.

Action in Fayetteville Motor Speedway’s 51st season resumes Sept. 13 with the third and final round of “Friday Night Fights.” Late Model, Diet Mountain Dew Modified, Sportsman, SportModz, and Stingerz will be on the card. In addition, the Renegades will renew the Blitz competition, and the Legends drivers will do battle in another of their Triple Threat Throwdown contests.
