8.7.21 Winchester Speedway Results

By Brent Hottle
Winchester, (VA) – It was another beautiful Saturday in the Shenandoah Valley. Warm temperatures and no rain, always makes for a great time at the race track. This event would turn out to be another great one with its good car counts and tight racing action in the heat races! Fans could see that the hard work Bobby Dove and his crew put in every week was once again providing great racing. We would see several side by side battles during the heat races that would heighten the anticipation for what the features would bring. Once our weekly invocation and playing of our National Anthem was finished, it was time for the main events.
First up would be the pure stock division. Outside pole sitter Walter Crouch would take the lead coming out of turn two. Pole sitter Tony Catlett would begin to apply pressure our leader. While that was happening, a three wide battle between Rob Nichols, Mike Grady Jr. and Brian Booze was waging. A lap four caution would slow the field and stall the battles. Crouch would continue to hold onto his lead after the restart. Grady would make quick work on the restart to get around Catlett for the second position. Crouch would go on to win the event. Behind him a war began between Grady and Catlett for the second finishing position. They would race side by side off and on during the final laps. As they came to the checkered flag, it would be Grady finishing second with Catlett finishing in the third position.
Next up was the Mid-Atlantic Modified Series Donnie Smith Memorial. Before the event started all 30 drivers would be brought up for a group photo. Once the photo was taken, each driver was given an introduction as they walked back to their cars. Austin Smith would give the command to start the engines. Once a four wide salute for the fans was complete, it was time to go racing. Outside pole sitter Steve Arpin would charge into the first corner and take the early lead. Mike Franklin and Michael Altobelli would begin to chase our leader. A lap five caution would slow the field and tighten the cars up. On the restart we would see Arpin continue to lead as Altobelli pulled ahead of Franklin for the second position. As the cars approached the eleventh lap, Arpin was pulling up to the back of the field as he had built up a ten car lead over second place running Altobelli. Arpin wouldn’t be slowed down any by lap traffic. We would see him go three wide around lap cars on several occasions. As Arpin navigated his way through the lap traffic he continued to build his lead to a full straightaway. We would see Arpin win the race with a half a track lead over second place finisher and current Mid-Atlantic Modifieds points leader Michael Altobelli Jr. Two notable mentions from this event came from our winner Steve Arpin. Arpin donated fifty dollars to three lucky fans from his event winnings. He also gave you Austin Smith the winner’s trophy from the event.
Now it was time for our limited late model division to take center stage. The veteran Brad Omps would take early lead off turn 2. However heartbreak would ensue for Omps as he would have a left rear tire start to loose air. The tire would finally go flat as Omps slowed to bring out the caution on lap four. On the restart we would see Kyle Lear and Justin Fulton battle side by side into the first turn. Lear would edge ahead and lead the fifth lap just before another caution would come out again on lap six. We
would see Lear keep his lead through two more cautions and restarts. After a lap eleven restart we would see Lear and James Lichliter begin to pull away from the rest of the field. Lichliter would try several times to pull up alongside Lear, but he could never get enough momentum to get around the leader. As Lear approached lap traffic on lap twenty-one. All eyes would be on the two front runners to see if Lichliter could use the lap traffic to his advantage. Lear would make all the right moves and take his second win of the season here at the speedway.
Next up was the crate late model division. We would see Scott Sweeney Jr. take the lead from the drop of the green flag and never look back. Sweeney would build up a straightaway lead over second place running Tyler Hoy. Sweeney would go on to his first career feature win in the caution free event. Hoy would finish in the second position.
The enduro division would finish out our night of racing. Pole sitter Jason Wilkins would grab the early lead. We would see a side by side battle between Wilkins and Cody Sumption on the fifth lap. A lap seven caution would slow the event, for a spinning Wilkins. Sumption would go on to cross the line first followed by Dylan Rutherford. But a tech infraction would take the win away from Sumption making Rutherford the winner.
Once again I want to thank all the fans and teams who attended and competed this weekend. In a world that has so many uncertainties. It’s always refreshing to go to your local dirt track and enjoy the sport we all love! I also want to thank everyone who helped me sing happy birthday to Holly Kaiser. Holly does a lot of behind the scenes work for the speedway. And we appreciate all of her hard work, along with the rest of our staff hard work at the track.
Don’t forget to bring the kids this coming Saturday night for the kids candy scramble!
