FREMONT, Ohio – While most will want to forget 2020, Cap Henry will remember it as the best season he has ever had in his sprint car driving career.
The Republic, Ohio driver used lapped traffic to take the lead on lap 27 of the 35 lap A-main Friday, Oct. 9 at Fremont Speedway and drove to his third victory of the season with the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions to open the 13th Annual Jim and Joanne Ford Classic on All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads Night. The A-main went non-stop and featured tremendous battles throughout the field.
It was Henry’s second win of the season at “The Track That Action Built and his 12th overall victory of 2020. Henry now has four career All Star wins and 12 career Fremont Speedway victories.
“It’s been a real good year for us. These guys just keep working on this thing getting it better and better. Zack (Myers) came to me right before I was jumping into the car and said I want to make some last minute changes and I’m real confident in his decision making so go for it. I think he made all the right ones. I’m so proud of this race team,” said Henry beside his Dragon’s Milk White/Beer Barrel Bourbon/Pro Auto Wraps/Big D’s Pizza/Geck Electric/FK Rod Ends backed machine.
“Ian (Madsen) kind of pulled away from us there and I knew as we got into traffic I had to start moving around to see what we could do. Turn two was the difference. Ian was committed to what he had to do and we were able to pull off and kind of run down…I feel that was the difference,” added Henry.
The event is co-sanctioned with the Ti22 Performance FAST Series and defending series champion Cole Duncan battled among the top three the entire feature but settled for second when the checkers flew.
“Congrats to Cap and those guys…they have one hell of a year going. I felt like for two thirds of that race we had the best race car and then I just really struggled with lapped cars. I’m not sure what we need to do different there other than a bonsai move but that’s not really my style. I’ll remember that and shove it in there with the right rear. That was a fun race track,” said Duncan beside his Ohio Heating/Helms Construction/Motor City/Scott Gressman/Factory Kahne.
Cory Eliason also battled among the top four the entire race and ended up rounding out the podium.
“I’m just happy…the last couple of times we’ve been to Fremont I haven’t been pleased at all. To get a podium out of it hopefully we learned something for tomorrow,” said Eliason of his Rudeen Racing/Hagar Realty/Rayce Rudeen Foundation/Fatheadz Eyewear/Elliotts Custom Trailers backed #26.
Fremont, Ohio’s Matt Foos took the lead of the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 A-main on lap 10 and built a substantial lead. But, the only caution of the race fell on lap 18, wiping out a five second lead for Foos who then had 2020 track champion Paul Weaver on his bumper. Foos hit his marks perfectly and drove to his second win of the year at Fremont; the ninth overall victory of his career at the track.
“I kind of figured we had a big lead before that caution because I saw my guys jumping around by the fence. I knew somebody was going to be there and I looked up and saw the 1W (Paul Weaver)…I’ve been getting my ass kicked by him all year and that makes you better. You are only as good as who you race against. This whole team is just jiving this year and I can’t wait to get to 2021,” said Foos beside his Speed Shark Graphics/818 Club/DR’s Powerlab/Kear’s Speed Shop/Berryman Racing Shocks backed #12.
Shawn Valenti, Fremont’s 2020 track champion in the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks, took the lead on lap seven and drove to his fifth feature win of the season. It was the 60th of his career at the track and placed him in a tie with John Ivy for fourth on the all-time win list.
“To get win #60 is pretty amazing to do it this season and pick up a third championship last week…hats off to my crew. I have to thank Adam and Christy Jones of A Plus Auto Center for everything they do, Gutter Works, Best Performance Motorsports, Scott’s Property Maintenance, Roelle Fabrication and Gressman Powersports,” said Valenti.
For the 126th appearance of the All Stars at Fremont, Ian Madsen and Max Stambaugh brought the field to green with Madsen taking the point over Henry, Stambaugh, Shane Stewart, Eliason, Craig Mintz and Cole Duncan. Eliason moved into third on lap five as the leaders began to inch closer to lapped traffic.
Madsen found the back of the pack by lap eight and Henry began to close wile Eliason and Duncan battled hard for third. Madsen sliced his way through traffic and built a 1.6 second lead by lap 12 with Henry, Eliason, Duncan, Stewart, Stambaugh and Mintz in pursuit.
At the half-way point Duncan had begun to close on Madsen and Henry but Eliason mounted a challenge as well, regaining the third spot by lap 19. Duncan returned the favor on lap 22 and closed on Henry as they battled in heavy lapped traffic.
Henry pounced on lap 27, grabbing the lead and steadily pulled away. Madsen soon found his hands full with Duncan who drove into second on lap 30. With two laps to go Henry had two lapped machines separating him from Duncan. Henry drove to the win over Duncan. Eliason, Madsen and Stewart.
Mike Keegan drove into the lead of the 25 lap 305 sprint feature with Dustin Stroup and Foos in pursuit. Foos took second on lap five and quickly closed on Keegan, driving into the top spot on lap 10 with Keegan, Stroup and Weaver giving chase.
Foos hit lapped traffic at the half-way point with Keegan, Stroup and Weaver staying close. Foos checked out, building a five second lead that quickly evaporated when the caution flew on lap 18. On the restart Foos had to hold off Weaver with Keegan, last week’s winner Steve Rando and Stroup in pursuit.
Foos ran the final seven laps to perfection and took the win over Weaver, Rando, Keegan, and Stroup.
Early cautions keep the field close in the dirt truck A-main with Andy Keegan leading the first six laps before Valenti drove to the point. Valenti pulled away for the win while Keegan won an entertaining battle for the runner-up spot over Kent Brewer, Keith Sorg and Dustin Keegan.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action to wrap up the 2020 season with the All Stars/FAST teams competing for $10,000 to win Saturday, Oct. 10. The 305 sprints and dirt trucks will again be in action.
