9.1.13 Selinsgrove Speedway Results

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Defending World of Outlaws champion Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., rebounded from Saturday night’s overheating issues with his No. 29 race car and drove to a convincing victory in Sunday night’s 15th annual Jeff’s Auto Body & Recycling Center Late Model National Open at Selinsgrove Speedway.

The $10,000 win came in front of a large crowd and was Lanigan’s first career at Selinsgrove and his 10th on the national tour. He became the track’s 10th different super late model feature winner this season.

Shane Clanton of Zebulan, Ga., was the night’s fast qualifier over a field of 36 super late models with a lap time of 19.244. This year’s race marked the first time the National Open was sanctioned by the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.

Gene Knaub of Dover also won the first race of his career at Selinsgrove and his 16th overall this season in the 20-lap limited late model feature.

The entire racing program was completed by 9:45 p.m. as both feature events went non-stop on the smooth half-mile clay oval.

Selinsgrove Speedway returns to racing action at 7 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 7, with a four division show of 358 sprint cars, late models, pro stocks, and roadrunners sponsored by Insinger Performance Products. Track gates will open at 5 p.m.

On the initial start of the Late Model National Open, the caution flag quickly unfurled when 12th-place starter Chub Frank slowed on the backstretch. For the complete restart, second-place starter Rick Eckert stormed into the lead with polesitter Eric Wells in pursuit. By the completion of lap three, fourth-place starter Darrell Lanigan advanced to third.

On the seventh circuit, Lanigan moved into the second position and set his sights on Eckert. By lap 13, Eckert and Lanigan began to encounter slower traffic in their race for the lead. A lap later, Lanigan made the winning pass by Eckert using the outside lane in turn two.

At lap 20, Lanigan was leading Eckert, third-place starter Dan Stone, fifth-place starter Shane Clanton, and 10th-place starter Josh Richards. Clanton passed Stone for the third position on lap 23 and on lap 24 Richards also got by Stone for the fourth position. With 20 laps remaining, sixth-place starter Matt Cochran began to show a lot of speed and drove into the top five.

In the final 10 laps of the race, Lanigan stretched his lead over Eckert, Richards, Cochran, and Clanton. Cochran completed a pass by Richards for the third spot on lap 47. At the checkered flag, Lanigan was victorious by 2.8 seconds over Eckert, Cochran, Richards, and Clanton.

Polesitter Jake Jones pulled into the lead at the start of the limited late model feature. At the completion of lap two, second-place starter Denny Bonebrake took command of the field for the next two laps. On the fourth circuit, fourth-place starter Gene Knaub made a run at the lead using the inside lane into turn one to take over the front position.

Once in front of the pack, Knaub opened up a lead over Bonebrake. At the half point of the race, Knaub was leading Bonebrake, seventh-place starter Chad Myers, eighth-place starter Robbie Black, and third-place starter Tommy Slanker.

With five laps remaining, Knaub began to encounter slower traffic and opened up a straightaway lead. At the finish, Knaub was victorious by five seconds over Myers, Bonebrake, Black, and sixth-place starter JR Rodriquez.
