9.1.18 Volusia Speedway Park Results

(9-1-18) Barberville, FL – Saturday night was the long awaited Benny Corbin Memorial featuring the Billy Ballew Motorsports Thunderstocks presented by Campbell Construction and Exquisite Pool and Spas for 98 laps and $5,000 going home to the winner. On Friday night teams did battle in a “Controlled” practice which held the top two times as provisional starters in the feature event if needed. The event brought 38 thunderstocks which meant four cars out of five heat races would go onto the feature with a two B-mains taking the other two cars. Also in action would see the Mercedes Benz Vans Street Stocks and United 3/4 Modifieds.

The main event of the night was the Billy Ballew Motorsports Thunderstocks presented by Campbell Construction and Exquisite Pool and Spas. When the green flag dropped it was Ron McCreary and Jason Fitzgerald leading the field to the green. As the feild came off the second turn it was Fitzgerald using the high side momentum to take the top spot with McCreary in tow, but it was Mike Tovet and Grady Christian making moves to the front further back in the field. After an early race caution it was Tovet taking over the top spot and dominating the first 3/4 of the race. Christian would take the top spot momentarily on a restart, but Tovet would battle back only a handful of laps later. A scary moment would happen just before the halfway point when pole sitter McCreary would get out of shape and go upside down after contact with Roger Wren. McCreary would be okay, but many drivers sustained damage in the accident. When the green flag dropped again it was still Tovet in the lead, but it was apparent tire wear would become an issue before the race was over as many teams including Scotty Kay Jr., Hayden McCormick, Dustin Turnage Sr., and others made pit stops for new right rear rubber. The top two spots of Tovet and Christian would notably stay out on the track however, which would prove to be costly. First it was Christian loosing a right rear tire with less than 20 laps remaining. Then it was the heartbreak of Tovet’s right rear tire expiring with just three laps remaining. Tovet would not continue as Hayden McCormick would take over the top spot. McCormick would hold off not one, but two restart challenges of Kay to go on and win the 5th annual Benny Corbin Memorial taking home the top prize. Kay would finish second followed by Turnage Sr., Christian, and Buddy Pope.
