FREMONT, Ohio – Lemoore, California’s Cole Macedo rebounded from a crash Friday to take the 410 feature win Saturday, Sept. 11 at Fremont Speedway on Iron Workers Local 55 Night. The Ray Brooks Racing team worked most of the night and early morning to build a new car for Macedo to earn his third win of the season at “The Track That Action Built.”
“This whole Ray Brooks Racing, Linder’s Speed Equipment, Grant Decker Construction car….it’s a team effort for sure. We had a tough night last night and we stayed up until 2 a.m. stripping the other car and these guys woke up early while I was sleeping and got this car ready to go. It’s just so fun racing for these guys. We’ve had a really high and low race season and Ray Brooks has stuck with us through thick and thin,” said Macedo beside his Fremont Auto Parts, T&T Laser Alignments, Grant Decker Construction, Linder’s Speed Equipment, Gill Construction, CK Mechanical, ML Graphics, Diversified Builders backed machine.
Macedo made a huge move with four laps to go in lapped traffic that sealed the win.
“They’re running side by side right and front of me and I really didn’t know what to do. I knew I was losing a lot of speed…not getting off of four not getting off of two really hurts you here. I knew I had to get going even if I had to move some people and luckily I didn’t they kind of just moved out of the way and that last move on the last lap getting by two lapped cars in one and two…I feel like that’s what made the race. If I didn’t do that I might have gotten passed by DJ (Foos),” added Macedo.
Fremont’s DJ Foos finished second in the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint feature and earned his second All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products 410 Attica Fremont Championship Series presented by the Baumann Auto Group title.
“It always sucks to run second. I happy for the Ray Brooks Racing team and Cole Macedo. I thought I had a shot there…I just pulled the wing a little too far and got myself too tight. I’m so happy though for the whole Burmeister Racing Team winning this AFCS deal. They work really hard. We have a lot of good races coming up and I really want this Fremont Speedway track championship…that one means a lot. This one (AFCS) means a lot too…this one pays the bills. I grew up coming here. Hopefully we can make it happen…it would be a dream come true,” said Foos.
Fremont’s Matt Foos used a restart with just four laps to go to pressure race-long leader Paul Weaver and took the lead on lap 23 and drove to his second Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint feature win of the year. Fremont’s current division point leader now has 11 career wins at the track.
“I knew if I got to Paul’s inside I might be able to force him up too high and make a mistake and he got over the cushion in turn two and I was able to capitalize. We’ve been fast all season but was missing something and when we got my dad back from Florida that was piece of the puzzle. We need to finish off this deal and win the championship,” said Foos beside his Fremont Fence, Mitten Painting, 818 Club, Level Performance, Kear’s Speed Shop, Rohr Total Lawn Care, Speedshark Graphics, FK Rod Ends backed #12.
Fremont’s Paul Weaver finished third and earned his second NAPA of Bryan 305 AFCS presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales title.
“I really wanted to win the feature and the championship but I had a tire seal up and it cost me,” said Weaver.
Fremont’s Jamie Miller took the lead in the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Truck feature with eight laps to go and drove to his fourth victory of the season. It’s the 27th win of his career at the track.
“This thing is just so easy to drive. It’s like on cruise control. Hopefully we can win some more races and get a shot at the track title,” Miller said beside his Fostoria Mod Shop backed machine.
Kyle Capodice jumped into the early lead of the 30 lap 410 sprint feature with Foos, Duane Zablocki and Macedo in tow. Macedo took third on lap two and after a good battle with Foos moved into second on lap six. Following a couple of early race cautions, the running order by lap 12 was Capodice, Macedo, Nate Dussel, Foos, Greg Wilson, Zablocki, Chris Andrews and 20th starter Craig Mintz.
Macedo used a restart on lap 13 to take the lead and began to pull away to a two second lead. With 10 laps to go Foos drove around Capodice for second and began to close on Macedo. With five laps to go Foos was within a half second of Macedo but a great move on lapped cars on lap 26 gave Macedo some breathing room. After taking the white flag Foos was within a car length of Macedo who executed a daring pass of two lapped cars exiting turn two and drove to the win over Foos, Capodice, Dussel and Wilson.
Weaver grabbed the lead in the 25 lap 305 feature at the drop of the green with Dustin Stroup getting around Foos for second on lap two just before a red flew for a nasty crash involving Cody Brewer. Brewer’s throttle hung up and he went full speed into the turn four wall which was covered with soft wall material. Brewer went to the hospital to be checked over but was alert and conscious.
When the race resumed Weaver pulled away from Stroup as Foos battled Bryce Lucius for third. Heavy lapped traffic by lap 11 allowed Stroup to close on weaver but once clear of the traffic Weaver built up a nearly three second lead. Stroup would stop on lap 21, wiping out Weaver’s advantage.
On the restart Foos pressured Weaver on the bottom of the track and when Weaver slid over the cushion in turn two on lap 23 Foos took the lead. Foos drove to the win over Steve Rando who charged from 17th, Weaver, Jamie Miller and Shawn Valenti.
The truck feature was marred by many cautions with Jeff Babcock leading the first five laps with Valenti taking the point on laps six through 11. Miller took the lead on lap 12 and drove away to the win over Valenti, Babcock, Cory McCaughey who started 18th and Cory Ward.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 18th on Roots Poultry Night featuring the FAST 410 sprints, BOSS non-wing sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks.
