9.13.19 Lakeside Speedway Results
Lakeside Speedway welcomed 88 drivers and race teams for week five of Weekly Racing on Friday the 13th. Among drivers on hand were 14 A-Mods, 29 B-Mods, 13 Stock Cars, 8 Grand Nationals, 13 E-Mods and 11 Pure Stocks.
Throughout the evening drivers competed in 13 preliminary heat races and six main events. By the end of the night, Darron Fuqua, Andy Bryant, Justin Seifert, Don Marrs, Trevor Hand and Spencer Reiff found their way to victory lane.
PURE STOCKS: Heat #1 (top 3): Wayne Brooke, Spencer Reiff, D.J. Barnes; Heat #2 (top 3): Keith Jennings, Marshall Jewett, Darrin Christy; A-Main: Keith Jennings and Wayne Brooke started on row 1 of the 10-lap Pure Stock main event. Jennings assumed command for the opening segment as he and Reiff pulled away from the field. The lead duo raced closely through lap 5 as Reiff took the lead. Meanwhile, Jewett and Brooke had their own classic battle going on for the third position. As the laps wore down, Reiff pulled away to complete his second consecutive victory and second Lakeside win of the season. Jennings was second at the line followed by Jewett, Brooke, Barnes and Christy.
E-MODS: Heat #1 (top 3): Adam Schelert, Steven Makar, Buz Kaster; Heat #2 (top 3): Jessie Mulich, Trevor Hand, Shawn Burns; A-Main: Schelert and Makar earned front row honors for the night’s 15-lap E-Mod feature. Hand took command of the race from the onset and by lap 8, built an eight-second lead over Makar, Schelert, Mulich and Brian Andrews. Shortly after Makar exited the track with a flat tire, caution flew at lap 11 for debris on the back stretch. Hand led the field back to the green flag but the yellow quickly flew again for a single-car spin off turn 2. Racing resumed once again with Hand leading Schelert and Mulich as Hand quickly went back to work and opened a half-straight-away lead by the white flag lap ahead of Schelert and Andrews. In the end, Hand dominated the race with his third feature win of the season. Schelert finished a strong second with Andrews third followed by Mulich, Burns and Kaster.
GRAND NATIONALS: Heat (top 3): Don Marrs, Darren Kling, Nick Drew Jr.; A-Main: Kling and Marrs shared the front row for the 10-lap Grand National feature. Marrs grabbed the early lead with Kling in second as the lead duo pulled away from Terry Bruner in third. At lap 3, Kling challenged for the lead and kept the pressure on through lap 5, when a caution flag flew for debris on the speedway. When racing resumed, Marrs and Kling resumed their battle through lap 8 as Marrs began to pull away slightly over Kling and eventually went on to secure his third feature win of the season. Kling was second followed by Bruner, Steven Dibben, Jim Baker and Dennis Melvin Sr.
STOCK CARS: Heat #1 (top 3): Justin Seifert, Kacey Shields, Tim Pruett; Heat #2 (top 3): Tim Shields, Nick Whalen, Jason Newman; A-Main: Whalen and Tim Shields began the night’s 15-lap Stock Car main event. Whalen led the opening laps of the quick-paced race ahead of Seifert and Tim Shields. Whalen led through lap 3 before Seifert took command. The race leader set a torrid pace through the first two-thirds of the race with Whalen maintaining his runner-up position just in front of Tim Shields and a hard-charging Austin O’Neal, who started 11th. At lap 10, caution flew for debris on the track after Tim Shields lost a left front tire. Shields later returned to the race with new left front rubber. Racing resumed with five laps remaining as Seifert led Whalen, O’Neal and Pruett for the restart. Late in the race, O’Neal advanced to second and put pressure on the leader by lap 13 but the caution waved again for a stalled car in turn 4. Ultimately, Seifert held on for the thrilling victory holding off a furious charge by O’Neal, who settled for second. It was Seifert’s first win of the season. Behind the lead pair were Whalen with a strong run in third, followed by Pruett, Jerry Liston Jr., and Hank Thompson.
B-MODS: Heat #1 (top 3): Andy Bryant, Jake Richards, Don Marrs; Heat #2 (top 3): Luke Nieman, Ben Stockton, Billy Spillman; Heat #3 (top 3): Clint Johnson, Nick Newton, Chase Galvan; Heat #4 (top 3): Shadren Turner, Patrick Royalty, Luke Phillips; B-Main (top 3): Colten Stevents, Tyson Lanfermann, Blake Pierce; A-Main: For the night’s 20-lap B-Mod main event, Turner and Bryant earned front row honors. After two attempts to begin the race, green flag racing ensured with Turner leading through lap 2 over Johnson and Newton before caution flew for a two-car incident in turn 2. Turner held point at the front of the field as Newton closed in on the leader. By lap 9, Newton pressured for the lead but clipped a utility tire as his night came to an end. When racing resumed, Bryant continued to rebound through the field after going tail back on the first complete restart after stopping on the track in turn 4 as his hood was removed. By lap 9, Bryant advanced to fifth. Meanwhile, several close battles took place inside the top 5 with Stockton, Johnson and Nieman. At the lap 10 marker, Bryant advanced to third and two laps later moved to second. Stockton’s night came to an end late in the race after his and Trevor Hunt’s cars became hooked together. This set up a final push for Bryant’s bid to come from the tail of the field for the win. By lap 14, Bryant took command of the race ahead of Turner, Johnson and Royalty. As the laps wore down, Johnson advanced to second and tried to keep Bryant in check but in the end, Bryant pulled off one of the strongest comeback runs ever witnessed in the storied history of Lakeside and came away with the victory. Johnson finished second followed by Turner in a strong run to third. Nieman came away fourth. Phillips was fifth with Royalty in sixth.
A-MODS: Heat #1 (top 3): Randal Schiffelbein Jr., Nic Bidinger, Justin Johnson; Heat #2 (top 3): Austin Siebert, Mark Schafman, Paden Phillips; A-Main: Schiffelbein and Schafman brought the field to green for the night’s final event: the 20-lap A-Mod main event. Bidinger was unable to make the grid for the main event, which elevated Schafman to the front. Schafman was strong at the front of the field and led the first eight circuits before Johnson took command at lap 8. Schafman bounced back a lap later to take the lead back but Johnson then went back out front to lead the way. A yellow flag flew over the field at lap 15 for Schifelbein as his car spewed liquid down the front stretch, ending his bid for a strong run. On the restart, Johnson led Schafman and Darron Fuqua. Although Johnson was strong, Fuqua was stronger on the restart and took command of the race at lap 16, relegating Johnson to second. Fuqua opened up a slight advantage over Johnson who kept within distance of the leader. Siebert advanced to third late in the race in a tight battle with Schafman and Phillips. Ultimately, Fuqua went on to secure his second consecutive victory of the season with Johnson finishing a strong second. Siebert advanced to third by race end just ahead of Schafman in fourth. Phillips was fifth with Tad Davis sixth.
