9.15.18 Lakeside Speedway Results

The Jayhawk Modified Shootout concluded Saturday at Lakeside Speedway with 88 race teams on hand for competition, including 15 E-Mods, 25 Mod-Lites, 23 B-Mods, and 25 Modifieds. The night’s events included 12 preliminary heat races, the night two Modified Scramble, and four main events, including the 40-lap Jayhawk Modified Classic.

Preliminary events recap: E-Mods were first to hit the track for a pair of six-lap heat races. Patrick Royalty made an E-Mod appearance on the night and claimed the opening heat race with Rodney Schweizer advancing to second. The 2018 E-Mod Champion took heat two as Billy Spilman pulled away from Trevor Hand for the victory.

A healthy field of 25 Mod-Lites raced their way to the main event through four heats with David Raffurty collecting the opening heat win over Iowa’s Randy Bryan. A close battle took place in heat two for the win with Travis Alexander just edging Cody Miller at the line. Four-time Lakeside feature winner Dillon Raffurty dominated for the win in heat three with Michael Raffurty holding on for second. After the red flag was displayed for Yancy Shepard, who took a series of tumbles in between turns three and four, and walking away from the incident okay, the final Mod-Lite heat of the night belonged to Justin Raffurty from tail back over Jon Braathun.

B-Mods made their way to the track next in the order for a series of prelims with Billy Spilman taking command in the opening heat with Jayden Bears taking second. Fans witnessed a classic battle in heat two as Luke Nieman ultimately prevailed over Brian Murphy for the win. Former Lakeside Speedway Champion Dan Charles returned to competition and sat on the pole for heat three and eventually took the victory over 2018 Lakeside B-Mod Champion Tim Powell. The final heat was a close one with Andy Bryant making a last-lap pass on Sturgis Streeter for the win.

Modifieds closed out the night’s heat races with a pair of heats to setup the starting grid for the 15-lap scramble later in the evening. Claiming the opening heat was Webb City, Missouri’s Scott Drake over Tad Davis. In the final preliminary heat of the night, Lance Town dominated for the victory with Lee Hibner of Chillicothe, Missouri claiming second.

Main events recap: The second half of the program began with the E-Mods on the track for their 15-lap featured event with Billy Spilman on pole in search of his 11th victory of the season. After a quick caution after lap one, Spilman led Schweizer at the front as Ben Stockton fought hard to close in on the leaders at lap five. By lap 10, Schweizer began putting pressure on Spilman and by lap 9 and eventually took the lead from Spilman by lap ten. A late0race restart bunched the field with four laps remaining as Schweizer held strong right to the checkers to claim his first win of the season. Spilman finished a strong second with Shawn Burns advancing to third at the finish. Patrick Royalty finished fourth followed by Steven Makar to round out the top five.

Up next was the large field of Mod-Lite competitors for their 15-lap main event with Dillon and David Raffurty on row one. After a series of early cautions, Dillon Raffurty held court at the front with David and Justin Raffurty close behind. By lap ten, Dillon Raffurty pulled away to a half straightaway lead from the fierce battle for second. Meanwhile Michael Raffurty was fourth with Justin Raffurty fifth. At the finish, Dillon Raffurty collected his fifth victory of the year over Justin Raffurty, who just edged David Raffurty at the line for third with Mike Raffurty fourth and Ed Griggs fifth.

Modifieds then returned to the speedway for the night two scramble to determine starting positions 13 to 24 for the Jayhawk Modified Classic later in the evening. Lance Town looked strong early in the event, but it was Lance Mari who took command when the drivers settled into their racing groove. Scott Drake moved to second at the halfway mark trying to close in on Mari and eventually chased down the leader and took command at lap 13 and went on to record the victory over Town. After the night two scramble, the night one locked in scramble cars returned for a special Modified hot-lap session to ready for the night’s final event.

Next in line for main events were the B-Mod drivers for a 20-lap main event with Jayden Bears and Dan Charles occupying row one. A multi-car crash at the start of the race in turn one marred the start of the event as several cars were eliminated. After a long red-flag delay, the event re-started with Tim Powell showing the way through a series of cautions, which ultimately led to the race being shortened to 12 laps. At the finish, Powell went on to collect his ninth feature win of the season. Sturgis Streeter was second followed Luke Nieman, Brian Murphy and Nick Newton in a strong rebound to fifth.

The night’s final event was the $5,000-to-win, 40-lap main event for Modifieds. Rodney Sanders and Kerry Davis began the night’s final race on row one and after a pair of early race cautions, Sanders flexed his muscle and established himself the clear front-runner. By lap ten, a great battle for second ensued with Darron Fuqua working to catch Kerry Davis by lap 15. Sanders built a full straight advantage by lap 20 as Fuqua moved into second place by the midway point. Davis held strong in third but lost ground to Fuqua as Mark Schafman and Justin Johnson ran inside the top five.

By lap 23 both Lance Town and Fuqua experienced problems and reported to the hot pit for repairs. Brian Green then experienced contact with the turn-one wall to draw a caution as Fuqua and Town returned to the race. When the field went back to green Sanders again drove away from his closest pursuer, Kerry Davis in second. Schafman moved into third with Johnson fourth and Aaron Marrant fifth by lap 30. In the final ten laps Sanders built his lead to over five seconds as laps wound down leaving Davis and Schafman to battle for second nearly ten seconds behind the leader until a pair of late-race caution flags slowed the race with five laps remaining. Sanders again pulled away in the final laps for the victory by four and-a-half seconds over a strong run in second to give his Mother and Father a reason to cheer on their 61st wedding anniversary! Mark Schafman wrapped up his solid season in third with Fuqua rebounding to fourth and Aaron Marrant fifth.
