9.18.20 Patriot Sprint Tour Results
By Paul Harkenrider (Susquehanna, Pa) | In what has been an extremely shortened season for the Patriot Sprint Tour, a familiar face made it back to victory lane at Penn Can Speedway. Davie Franek cashed in on his front row starting spot to take his tenth career PST A-Main win over Denny Peebles, Billy VanInwegen, Matt Farnham and Paulie Colagiovanni. This was the A Main that carried over from the August 28 rained out show.
It was a very slow start in the first A-Main with several cautions in the first half of the event. After 25 total minutes into the race, it was deemed that the race could not finish with the amount of fuel that was left for the remainder of the A. An eight-minute closed red was placed on the racetrack for fuel.
On the restart, the battle for positions two through four was a toss up, lap after lap between Denny Peebles, Billy VanInwegen, and Denny Peebles.
This would give Franek an advantage as he was able to space himself in the clean air form the remainder of the field. As the checkered flag waved, it was the 2019 series champion Davie Franek sitting in victory lane over Denny Peebles and Billy VanInwegen.
No one could match the 2019 series champion and he would cross the checkers first over Peebles, VanInwegen, Matt Farnham, and Paulie Colagiovanni. This was Franek’s tenth career PST sanctioned win which moves him to ninth all time in overall tour wins.
It was emotional victory lane as Franek pointed to the sky remembering one of his best friends at the race track, Pete Richardson who the racing community lost last month.
Heat race wins from the carried over event went too Franek, Chuck Hebing, and Dave Axton. Dallas Schott scored the Bonnell’s Dash for cash.
In the second event of the night, it was finally Matt Farnham’s night to shine scoring his first feature of his career in just his 12th start in a 360-sprint car.
Farnham started fourth and had his work cut out on him as he would trail the front row of Danny Varin and Kelly Hebing. Varin would take command early with Brett Wright, Kelly Hebing, and Farnham all vying for the top spot.
Farnham was able to maneuver the car wherever to push by Kelly Hebing and Brett Wright. This would allow Farnham to focus on tracking down the leader in Varin.
There were restarts on lap six and nine where Varin was able to maintain the race lead over the rest of the field. It was until a lap 12 restart that Farnham would take his car hard into the first corner pulling alongside Varin exiting two down the back stretch.
As the two would fly wing to wing into turn three, Varin was unable to protect his line from Farnham which allowed Farnham to pull away from the field.
For the remaining 12 laps, the Western NY driver was no match for anyone else and he would cruise for his first PST A- Main win of his career over Varin, Brett Wright, Scott Kreutter, and Kelly Hebing.
Heat race wins went too Farnham, Varin and for the first time in her career, Kelly Hebing. The Bonnell’s Rod Shop dash win went to Denny Peoples while the B Main win went too Dalton Herrick.
