9.23.17 Southern Nationals Bonus Late Models Results

By Michael Despain MARYVILLE, TN – September 23, 2017 – The Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Bonus Series presented by Sunoco Race Fuel and Tennessee RV and the Schaeffer’s Oil Iron-Man Championship Late Model Series would co-sanction the Harvest Festival/Slingin’ Dirt for Vicki event on Saturday evening at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN and T.J. Reaid of Ackworth, GA would make a late-race pass and take the $5,000 payday. In companion Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series action, Shon Flanary of Surgoinsville, TN would also make a late-race pass to score his fourth-consecutive series win and claim the $1,500 payday.

The win by Reaid made him the eighth different winner in nine total Southern Nationals Bonus Series event, which was co-sanctioned with the Iron-Man Late Model Championship series, and made Reaid the 12th different winner in twelve total Iron-Man Late Model events for the season. Reaid’s victory would come behind the wheel of his Glenn Cast/Cox Interiors sponsored #41r Capital Race Cars, Cornett Race Engines powered mount. Flanary’s fourth-consecutive Modified Series victory come in the seat of his familiar NAPA of West Liberty/FAST Trucking/Custom Suspensions/Casva Angus Farms/Auto Body Specialist/Will Kinzer Foundation for Autism Research sponsored #98 MB Customs, Mullins Race Engines powered entry.

Ray Cook would jump to the race lead on the initial start after assuming the outside front-row starting position when original outside-pole starter could not make the call to start after pulling into the infield to initially line-up. As the field worked to complete the first lap, a tangle involving Ryan King, Craig Greer, Joey Standridge, James Roulette, and Jeff Neubert would occur in turn one and negate the start. While clean-up from the incident took place and the field was relined, McIntosh was able to get his entry going and would pull onto the track and start at the rear of the field. Once action got underway, Cook would have the lead, with T.J. Reaid, Billy Ogle, Jr., Tommy Kerr, and Skylar Marlar giving chase. Cook and Reaid would pull away a bit from the field, while Kerry would take the third position from Ogle, Jr. on lap five and Marlar would pick off Ogle, Jr. for fourth one circuit later. Action would settle down at this point until the final caution of the race flew on lap thirteen when Steve Smith would slow on the frontchute with mechanical issues. The restart would see Cook and Reaid again motor away from the pack, while Brad Skinner would take the fifth position away Ogle, Jr. on lap fourteen. Meanwhile, McIntosh was charging his way through the field and would make his way into the top five by lap twenty. The lead duo of Cook and Reaid would start working some slower traffic on lap twenty-five, while McIntosh would finally get the fourth position from Marlar as a long battle for the spot on lap twenty-eight. The lead pair of Cook and Reaid would enter heavier traffic on lap thirty-three and Reaid would pull alongside of Cook on several occasions, but could not make the pass, while Tommy Kerr would close in on the race for the lead from his third position. But lap thirty-seven would be when Reaid pulled even with Cook exiting turn two and was able to get by Cook as the pair entered turn three as they battled with two lapped cars. Kerr would get by Cook for second on lap thirty-eight, but Reaid would see the checkered flag and take the win, with Kerr claiming second and Cook settling for third. McIntosh would score a fourth-place effort, while Marlar completed the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be Skinner, Ogle, Jr., Stacy Boles, Carder Miller, and David Payne.

In the Brucebilt Performance Iron-Man Modified Series feature event, Jimmy Payne would get the jump on Shon Flanary at the start of the event and Payne would lead the first fifteen circuits of the event before Flanary would duck below Payne exiting turn two and make what would turn out to be the winning pass down the backchute entering turn three. Flanary would drive on to claim the win, while Payne would outduel Blake Brown for the runner-up spot, with Brown having to settle for the third position. Brad Hall and Joey Cotterman would complete the top five finishers.
