Fayetteville driver sweeps weekend, pockets two-day total of $56,350

Andrew Stotler Wins Renninger Memorial For Econo Late Models

Zearfoss and Fedder claim 2017 track titles

Port Royal – Aboard the Don Kreitz Jr. owned No. 69K, Lance Dewease of Fayetteville rode to victory in the 50th annual Tuscarora 50 for sprint cars at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night, recording triumph in the richest event held in oval history.

With the victory, Dewease completed a clean sweep of the weekend’s Tuscarora 50 races sanctioned by the All Star Circuit of Champions Sprints at Port Royal.

After claiming Friday’s Night Before The 50 checkers worth $5,000, Dewease took home $51,350 including lap money for his run in Saturday’s Tuscarora 50 itself, to push his weekend earnings to $56,350.

The victory was the Fayetteville flyers unprecedented sixth tally in the prestigious event, with no other pilot owning more than four wins and it gave car owner Don Kreitz Jr. of Sinking Spring his record-tying fifth win in the race as an owner.

Dewease won the race last year for Kreitz and Kreitz himself drove his own machine to three wins, thus tying Al Hamilton and Bob Weikert, who also own five Tuscarora checkers.

Without questions, Dewease’s most important race of the night occurred in his running of the events fourth heat race.

Having started second in the eight-lap affair, Dewease had to contend with Mark Smith and Greg Hodnett to earn the sixth starting spot in the main event.

A win in his heat would give him that starting spot and on the start Dewease fell back to third, behind Smith and third starter Hodnett.

Dewease brought the fans to their feet as he rallied from behind to dig past Hodnett for second, commanding his car to maneuver to the front in a race-long battle to get the top spot.

After battling hard for the win, he was able to get by Smith with a rousing pass for control and those heat race battles set the pilot up for his good fortunes in the feature although he destroyed his tires in the process of digging to get the heat victory.

In the 25-mile, 50-lap, 50th annual Tuscarora 50 feature, polesitter Ryan Smith of Kunkletown took the lead when action began over Danny Dietirch and Dewease on the first lap, who had gotten a great start.

Dewease made relatively quick work of Dietrich for second, motoring into the spot while using the low groove on just the third tour.

It then took Dewease only three circuits to run down Smith’s No. 94 and drive by for control on the seventh tour.

From there, the leader worked lapped traffic for the balance of the non-stop first 25-lap segment of the race and by the time the mandatory red flag for refueling appeared on lap 25, Dewease held a 3.762 second advantage over Smith.

Ninth starter Brock Zearfoss drove into contention while also battling for the track title on the 19th tour, getting by Dietrich for third, where he would restart after the refueling period.

Dietrich restarted with the fourth spot and Joey Saldana restarted fifth.

The second non-stop, 25-lap segment would prove to be all Dewease on the restart and for the duration as with 20 laps to go the gap between first and second was 2.886 seconds.

Dewease was able to work the bottom, middle and high grooves whenever needed to hold onto firm command of the race and ended up taking his 106th career Port Royal sprint car win by 3.948 seconds ahead of Ryan Smith.

Zearfoss would cross the finish line in third and in doing so the Jonestown pilot pushed himself into a scant point lead that netted him the 2017 Weikert’s Livestock Port Royal Speedway track championship over Dylan Cisney of Port Royal.

After starting 22nd in the race, Lucas Wolfe rode home fourth and took home hard charger laurels worth $1,000 in memory of the late Bob Bergstresser.

Fifth place went to Kerry Madsen.

Sixth through 10th went to Danny Dietrich, Brian Brown, Saldana, Ryan Taylor and four-time Tuscarora champion Greg Hodnett.

TJ Stutts earned $760 for the Lucas Snyder hard luck award as the first car out of the race, finishing 27th.

Heats for the 66 cars in action went to Tony Stewart, Tim Kaeding, Ryan Smith, Lance Dewease, Danny Dietrich and Carl Bowser.

The C Main was taken by Freddie Rahmer with Greg Hodnett taking the B Main.

Kerry Madsen set fast time with a lap of 16.164 seconds.

Kody Lehman earned the Will Gamble award as the first Port Royal regular not to qualify for the show, worth $300.

Andrew Stotler led the entire 22 laps of the Butch Renninger Memorial for econo late models, taking home some $2,026 for the win including lap money.

Andrew Yoder took second from Eric Irvin with two laps to go.

With a finish of fourth in the event, Newport’s Tim Fedder ended the night as the 2017 Gray’s Auto & Towing Econo Late Model Track Champion.

Derrick Garman finished the race in fifth.

Heats went to Garman, Irvin and Fedder.
