6.3.17 Southern Ontario Sprints Results
South Buxton, Ont – June 3rd 2017 – The Southern Ontario Sprints tour headed west to South Buxton Raceway for round 2 of competition for the 2017 season. On a beautiful June evening, a well groomed race track and full grandstand greeted the teams that had arrived from as far as 4 hours away. Unfortunately, due to various circumstances, only 7 teams were able to attend the event.
That gave the racers pretty good 1 in 7 odds of taking home the $1,200 to win prize and the hard racing and quality of the event was not deterred by the lower car count.
The 7 car field ran two heats with the starting line up for the second heat inverted from the first and the combined result set the starting line up for the 25 lap feature event. In the first heat, local racer #38 Tyler Hendricks of Chatham held off the #15 of Mike Ferrell for the win. The second heat saw Shawn Sliter in the #22 finish ahead of Ridgetown, Ontario’s #30 Adam West.
The 25 lap feature event pushed off with Tyler Hendricks and Shawn Sliter pacing the field from the front row. #38 Hendricks jumped out to the early lead with Shawn Sliter and Dylan Westbrook in hot pursuit. Lap 5 saw the caution flag fly for the first of 3 times of the night for the spinning #22 of Shawn Sliter in turn 4. On the restart, young Dylan Westbrook was challenging the #38 of Hendricks for the lead and the #30 of Adam West was closing in fast. Lap 17 would see things turn for Shawn Sliter, as he would once again find himself facing the wrong direction in turn four to bring out the second yellow of the event.
As they say in racing, yellows breed yellows, and on the restart the #15 of Ferrell would take advantage of the packed up field to pull alongside the #66 of Frank Baranowski down the back stretch into turn three. Light contact between the two would have the #66 loop around and continue but not before the yellow lights had come on, bunching up the cars for a quick final restart.
With the restart and laps winding down, the 47x of Dylan Westbrook would make his move to the front and get around #38 of Tyler Hendricks for the lead. The #30 of Adam West, in his first race of 2017, would charge home third, while Mike Ferrell in the #15 would have a career best finish of 4th and #22 Shawn Sliter would salvage his night rounding out the top 5.
