Dewease Beats Brown For Port Royal Night Before The 50 Laurels In 65-car Field

Rine Wins Renninger Memorial Moon Shine Late Model Series Finale

Coleby Frye claims Moon Shine series title, Mike Lupfer take Port Royal late model crown

Port Royal – Lance Dewease of Fayetteville claimed Friday night’s 30-lap Night Before The Tuscarora 50 All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars feature at Port Royal Speedway, taking home $5,000 for his third win in the history of the event after out dueling Missouri’s Brian Brown for the victory.

An amazing 65-car field of sprint cars entered competition for the event with the 50th annual Tuscarora 50 paying $50,000 to win looms on Saturday night.

In the 33-lap Butch Renninger Memorial Moon Shine Camo Rt. 35 Challenge Series finale, Danville’s Jeff Rine pocketed the winner’s loot while Coleby Frye of Dover took home the Moon Shine Camo Series title.

The first lap of the Night Before the 50 was slowed when point leader Dylan Cisney came up with a busted racer on the frontstretch.

And then the second lap was also slowed when Tony Stewart rolled to a stop with a blown motor, also on the frontstretch.

Brown of Grain Valley, Missouri, started on the pole in the event and was leading early over Mike Wagner, who took second from second-starter TJ Stutts on the second tour.

After a brief challenge from Wagner on the lap two restart, Brown was able to pull away with the lead while Dewease worked his way into contention.

He was able to get by Stutts for third with five away and then overtook Wagner for second on the 10th tour as the leaders entered the rear of the field.

With the lead, Brown worked his way through traffic at a dizzying pace while Dewease methodically closed down the distance between himself and the leader.

Brown made his best time buzzing around the top side while Dewease proved to work best when he ran the middle to bottom groove and as Brown worked traffic on the high side, Dewease would use that bottom groove to take control with five laps to go.

After a skirmish a few laps earlier during which time Dewease was able to get under Brown for control, the Midwest driver was able to slingshot back into control, leaving Dewease to lick his wounds and run him down again.

And then as the pair raced to the five-to-go mark, Brown got bottled up in traffic in the fourth corner and that was all Dewease needed to drive underneath for control.

Brown kept it close for a lap or two after giving up the lead before loosing ground at the finish.

TJ Stutts rode home a solid third followed by Greg Hodnett and Kerry Madsen, who started 10th.

Sixth through 10th went to Danny Dietrich, Mike Wagner, Dale Blaney, Danny Holtgraver and Ryan Smith.

The victory was the 105th of Dewease’s career at the oval and his fifth of the season at the track.

Heats for the 65-car field went to Trenton Sheaffer, Brady Bacon, TJ Stutts, Greg Hodnett and Brian Brown.

The C Main was won by Brandon Matus with Caleb Armstrong taking the D Main. Trey Starks copped the B Main.

Twin four-lap dashes went to Brown and Stutts with Brown setting a new four-lap track record of 1:04.111 seconds, eclipsing the old mark set by Dale Blaney in 1996.

Kerry Madsen set fast time with a lap of 15. 443 seconds.

Polesitter Jason Covert led from the start of the 33-lap Butch Renninger Memorial for super late models with Jeff Miller following.

A restart with two laps completed found sixth starter Jeff Rine already up to third.

Rine used the outside lane to blast around Miller on the restart and set his sights on Covert.

Covert entered traffic with the lead on the 11th tour and was heavily pressured by Rine over the ensuing laps before Rine got control on the 15th tour.

The pair actually swapped the lead twice on the lap with Covert going back out in front on the backchute only to again succumb to Rine as the pair traversed the third and fourth corner.

Once in front, Rine went unheeded to the victory that was worth $3,952 including lap money.

Ninth starter Coleby Frye worked the field to drive into second on the 21st tour however Frye was unable to challenge for the win, instead finishing 1.716 second behind at the finish.

Covert rode home third followed by Chad Hollenbeck and 25th starter Andy Haus.

Sixth through 10th went to Gary Stuhler, Mike Lupfer, Jeff Miller, Tim Wilson and Marvin Winters.

Heats went to Lupfer, Miller, Frye and Hollenbeck with Matt Sponaugle taking the consolation race.

Lupfer wrapped up the 2017 Port Royal track title with his run.

Frye claimed the Moon Shine Camo Rt. 35 Challenge Series title over Hollenbeck, Rine, Lupfer and Dylan Yoder.
