Park City, Kansas – April 13, 2018 – Tanner Mullens wrestled the lead from Scott Green with ten laps to go to claim the “Autism Awareness Challenge,” National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products modified season opener Friday night at 81 Speedway in Park City.
Josh Lanterman and Green started on the front row for the twenty-five-lap feature with Lanterman taking the lead as the green flag fell. Green, Brian Franz, Ryan McAninch and Mullens were the top five after the first lap with Lanterman holding on to a two-car length advantage.
Coming out of turn four on lap two, Lanterman slipped up just a bit and that allowed Green to take the lead coming down the front stretch to take the lead on lap three. The caution would then come out when Jon Herring, Jr. spun in turn two to cause a double-file restart behind the leader.
When race action resumed, Franz got past Lanterman down the backstretch to take over the runner-up position while Green opened a ten-car-length advantage.
After a lap eleven restart for Joe Adams, Mullens got underneath Franz to take second and set his sights on the leader. Lap fifteen saw Mullens take the lead down the backstretch while eighth starting Dan Powers moved into fourth past Darron Fuqua.
Several caution flags slowed the pace of the event on laps seventeen and eighteen which allowed Powers to take over the runner-up position and his sights on the leader. But there was no stopping Mullens on this night as he would go on to claim the full straight-away victory over Powers and the $3000 paycheck.
Franz settled for third with Cody Schniepp turning in his best series performance and coming home fourth. Schniepp had to do it the hard way as he had to transfer out of the night’s “C” and “B” features and start eighteenth in the feature finale. Green rounded out the top five.
The five, eight lap heat races for the forty-seven- car field were won by Franz, McAninch, Jason McGehee, Powers and Jon Herring, Jr. Tyler Davis claimed the ten-lap “D” feature while Schniepp claimed the twelve-lap “C” feature. Cole Traugott claimed the fifteen-lap “B” feature.
The next event for the NCRA Modified division will be at Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kansas on Friday night, May 4.
