CANEY, Kans. (May 26, 2018) – People celebrate birthdays in many ways. Whit Gastineau celebrated his in victory lane at Caney Valley Speedway on Saturday.
Gastineau started outside front row and paced the field for 30-laps to cap his birthday with his first Ameri-flex / OCRS Sprint Car victory of the season.
There was no cake in the pits, but Gastineau might have made up for it on the way home.
“I seem to win quite a bit on my birthday for some reason,” Gastineau recalled when asked about winning on his birthday. “No cake. Maybe we will see what the truck stop has on the way out.”
While Gastineau never lost the lead, pole setter Mickey Walker kept the pressure on throughout the race waiting for an opportunity that never materialized.
“He got underneath me probably five or six times,” Gastineau said of Walker. “I would change my lines up a little, but I was not moving. They were going to have to go around me. “I knew there were some cars behind me, but I wasn’t changing my line.”
Gastineau had his hands full behind the wheel of his Castrol Quick Lube sponsored Wesmar powered sprinter.
“I can’t believe hard good the track stayed. I was pretty tight,” explained Gastineau. “I had to kind of pitch it into the corner in (turn) 3 and just had to kind of park it in 1-2.
“On this track, you have to really tighten it up to come off the corners. The driver has to do the rest.
“It was a nice win. We had not won in a while.”
You could almost throw a blanket over the top three. While chasing Gastineau Walker also had his hands full with third place Alex Sewell. The two battled for the runner-up position and Sewell finally edged Walker for second where it counted the most – at the finish line.
Gastineau won by a 0.305 seconds over Sewell while Walker was just 0.308 seconds behind the leader. Joe Bob Lee was fourth 1.336 seconds behind and defending champion Zach Chappell rounded out the top five.
