7.7.18 Sooner Modified Series Results

By John Rittenoure – ENID, Okla. (July 7, 2018) – Adam Popp seemed destined for a second place finish in Saturday’s Sooner Late Model feature at Enid Speedway. At least that is the way it appeared through the first half of the race. But misfortune struck leader Jason Redman and Popp scrambled into the lead to win his first Sooner Series main event.
Popp became the seventh different winner in eight events on the 2018 Sooner Series tour.
Defending series champion Jason Redman drove off the pole into the early lead and Popp, who started inside the second row, gave chase. Popp was not able to get close enough to challenge Redman through the first 11 laps before the yellow flag waved on lap 12 for Kip Hughes who slowed with a right rear flat.
On the restart, Redman continued his pace until lap 14 when he begins to slow. Popp saw an opportunity and pulled alongside in turn two. Popp raced into the lead entering turn three and Redman pulled to the infield with mechanical problems. With Redman slowing out of turn four a scramble ensued and Mark Harrison raced around Steve Hawkins for second and Chris Kratzer raced into third.
Popp led the final 12 laps for the victory with Harrison and Kratzer not far behind. Hawkins finished in fourth and points leader Eddie Tidwell was fifth.
Tanner Mullen led green to checkered in the Sooner Modified series feature winning easily over Cole Traugott and Dustin Choate.
