Drivers filled the pit area at Lakeside Speedway 117-cars strong on Friday evening for the Karl Tinsley Pure Stock Memorial and week four of the Top Gun Series. There were 17 Pure Stocks on hand for the $1,000-to-win special event.
In addition to the Pure Stocks, 19 E-Mods, 7 Grand Nationals, 20 Mod-Lites, 14 Stock Cars, 23 B-Mods, and 17 A-Mods raced throughout the night through 14 preliminary heat races. The second half of the program featured seven main events to close out the night.
Pure Stock Recap (17 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Jason Ryun, Marshall Jewett, Connor Masoner. Heat Race Two Top Three: Gunner Martin, Wayne Brooke, J.R. Billings. A-Main Recap: In the special $1,000-to-win, 15-lap special event Karl Tinsley Memorial, it was gunner Martin and Jason Ryun started the event from row one. It didn’t’ take long for Martin to establish himself out front as he led through the first caution period at lap four. When racing resumed, it was Martin leading Ryun, Connor Masoner, Marshall Jewett, and J.R. Billings inside the top five. Martin quickly built up a half straightaway lead by lap eight, when the second caution of the night flew over the field. On the restart, it was again Martin out front with Masoner second, followed by Jewett, Billings, and Ryun. At lap ten, Martin continued to lead with Jewett moving to second over Masoner, Billings, and Ryun. The best battle on the track was for third as Billings, Masoner, and Ryun battled three-wide.
E-Mod Recap (19 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Trevor Hand, Jessie Mulich, Darren Bennett. Heat Race Two Top Three: Steven Makar, Dakota Earls, Brian Andrews. A-Main Recap: Trevor Hand and Jessie Mulich led the field to green for the 15-lap E-Mod main event. The yellow flag flew over the field by lap three and again by lap five as Hand led Steven Makar, Mulich, Darren Bennett and Dakota Earls. After racing resumed, Makar began to pressure Hand for the lead by lap eight and took the lead but one lap later, it was Hand who regained the lead in a fierce battle up front. Inside of five laps remaining, Hand continued to lead Makar, Mulich, Bennett and Brian Andrews. Just as the field passed under the flag stand, Mulich’s night came to a heartbreaking end after contact in turn one ultimately led to Mulich’s car being towed from the speedway. This setup a green, white, and checkered flag finish with Hand out front of Makar on the restart. The pair raced hard for the victory right until the end, but on this night, it was Hand who took the win, his second of the season. Makar crossed the line in third over Shawn Burns who bolted to third by the final lap, Brian Andrews finished fourth with Darren Bennett and Buz Kaster inside the top six.
Grand Nationals Recap (7 Cars): Heat Race Top Three: Don Marrs, Steven Dibben, Terry Bruner. A-Main Recap: Shawnee, Kansas driver Don Marrs and Kansas City, Kansas’ Terry Bruner sat on the front row for the 10-lap Grand National event. It didn’t take long for Marrs to begin building a strong lead over Bruner and Marshall Jewett by lap three. Coming for lap four, the one and only caution of the race flew over the field with Marrs leading Bruner, Jewett, Steven Dibben, and Darren Kling back to green-flag action. Once the field settled in, it was all Don Marrs out front for the remainder of the race as he set a blistering pace to pull away for the victory, his first win of the year over Kling, Jewett, Bruner, Dibben, Nick Drew, and Dennis Melvin, Sr.
Mod-Lite Recap (20 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: David Raffurty, Justin Raffurty, Kevin White. Heat Race Two Top Three: Ed Griggs, Jeff Raffurty, Tony Kerr. A-Main Recap: David Raffurty and Ed Griggs began the 12-lap main event for Mod-Lites leading the way into turn one. After a couple quick spins and false starts, the drivers settled into their race rhythm with David Raffurty showing the way over Justin Raffurty. By the end of the first lap, multiple-time Lakeside Speedway Mod-Lite winner Dillon Raffurty advanced from twentieth on the starting grid after suffering brake problems in his heat to move into sixth. By lap two, Dillon was third and battling for the lead with father David and Justin Raffurty, who took the lead at lap four. At lap five, David and Dillon Raffurty battled for the lead with Dillon taking command of the race and pulling away by lap seven. By lap eight, Ed Griggs moved up to battle for second in a close race with David and Justin Raffurty as the trio ran close for the position. Caution flew late in the race, forcing a green, white, and checkered-flag finish for the win. Griggs put heavy pressure on Dillon Raffurty on the restart and moved in front of Raffurty for part of the final lap but in the end, Dillon Raffurty regained momentum on the high side and went on to claim the victory ahead of Griggs in second. The Raffurty’s dominated the remainder of the top six with Justin, David, Mike, and Jeff crossing the line as the race concluded.
Stock Car Recap (14 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Tim Shields, Nick Whalen, Thomas Ground. Heat Race Two Top Three: Austin O’Neal, Justin Seifert, Kacey Shields. A-Main Recap: Nick Whalen and Tim Shields earn front-row starting spots for the 15-lap Stock Car feature. After a quick restart, the filed went back to action with Tim Shields leading Austin O’Neal, Whalen, David Holcomb, and Kacey Shields by lap three. Yellow flew over the field at lap four as Shields led O’Neal, Whalen, Holcomb, and Kacey Shields to the restart. Tim Shields sat comfortably out front during a six-lap run of green-flag racing but caution again slowed the field at lap ten. Tim Shields led O’Neal, Kacey Shields, Whalen, and Holcomb when green-flag racing resumed with five laps remaining. The restart was exciting with O’Neal pulling a slider in turns three and four to take command of the event moving Tim Shields back to second as Holcomb advanced to third. Just as drivers crossed the line on lap 12, the yellow flag flew for a spun car on the back stretch, but O’Neal also experienced a problem and spun from the lead, collecting Kacey Shields in the process. The race resumed with three laps remaining as Tim Shields went back to the lead over Holcomb and Whalen. In the end, Tim Shields claimed the victory by holding off a valiant charge by David Holcomb right to the finish. Behind Shields and Holcomb to complete the top six were Whalen, Thomas Ground, Kacey Shields, and Tim Pruett. Unfortunately, in post-race technical inspection, David Holcomb did not pass, and he was disqualified from the finish.
B-Mod Recap (23 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: J.C. Morton, Luke Nieman, Blake Pierce. Heat Race Two Top Three: Patrick Royalty, Sturgis Streeter, Colten Stevens. Heat Race Three Top Three: Jake Richards, Trevor Hunt, Nick Newton. A-Main Recap: J.C. Morton and Jake Richards took the initial green flag for the 20-lap B-Mod main event with Morton moving to the front in search of his third win in a row. Through lap four, Morton built nearly a full straightaway advantage on the field with Patrick Royalty, Jake Richards, Trevor Hunt, and Nick Newton inside the top five. Morton continued to pull away from the field through the lap 14 marker as Royalty began to slowly real in the leader gaining a half a second per lap. However, as soon as Royalty pulled close to Morton, the Springfield native pulled back away from Royalty and ultimately went on to collect his third B-Mod feature win in a row. Royalty was strong in second place followed by Jake Richards, Nick Newton, Trevor Hunt and Luke Nieman inside the top six.
A-Mod Recap (17 Cars): Heat Race One Top Three: Kerry Davis, Tim Karrick, Chad Lyle. Heat Race Two Top Three: Tyler Wolff, Terry Schultz, Lee Hibner. A-Main Recap: Davis and Wolff earned front-row starting honors for the night’s final event, the 20-lap A-Mod main. Wolf quickly grabbed the lead and by lap three had built up a half straightaway advantage over Davis, Chad Lyle, and Tim Karrick. By lap six, Wolff’s lead grew to a full straightaway gap as Wolf set a blistering pace up front. At lap ten, Wolff led Davis, Chad Lyle, Darron Fuqua and Karrick. Five laps later, the only change among the top five was Nic Bidinger moving into the fifth position. Wolff lapped up to tenth position by lap 18 as he continued to lead Davis with Darron Fuqua moving to third by the white-flag lap. At the end of the fast-paced race, which included just over 7 minutes of lightning fast green-flag racing, Wolff came away with his third victory in a row. Davis finished second for his best run of the season while Fuqua was third, Lyle fourth, Bidinger fifth, and Karrick sixth.
