The United Rebel Sprint Series kicked off night number one of the Bob Salem Memorial Sprint Car Nationals in grand style as 34 teams checked into the Decatur County Speedway. Fans were treated to some great racing action as Brian Herbert claimed the Myers Engine National Points victory by wiring the field from his outside pole starting position.
Coby Pearce led the field to the green flag with Herbert and Zac Taylor using the high line to bolt to the front of the pack. Pearce settled into the third spot with Jeremy Huish and Luke Cranston rounding out the top five at the end of lap one. Ninth starter JD Johnson started his charge to the front on lap three as he made his way up to challenge Cranston for the fourth spot. Johnson would continue to charge forward as he took the third spot away from Pearce who quickly fell back to fifth spot. Cranston settled into the fourth position but was soon challenged by 2013-2014 National Champion Jake Bubak by lap seven.
Out front Herbert still was in the lead with Taylor, JD Johnson, Cranston and Bubak in tow. Lap eight saw Jeremy Huish trying to get the low line to work battling Cranston for the fifth spot and hit an infield tire coming off of turn four to bring out the first caution of the night. Huish’s damage was minimal and he rejoined the tail of the field. On the restart Herbert once again pulled out to the lead with Taylor, JD Johnson, Bubak and Cranston in the top five. Behind them twelfth starting CJ Johnson had been making his way through the field and took away the fifth spot from Cranston on lap ten. Bubak had closed the gap between himself and JD Johnson and grabbed the position on lap eleven. Caution flew once again as Jordan Randles spun in turn three to once again bunch up the field.
On the restart Herbert once again took the point with Bubak taking away the runner up spot from Taylor. That put JD Johnson on Taylor’s bumper. The pair battled for several laps with JD Johnson taking the spot away from Taylor. Further back in the field, Jeff Radcliffe had made his way up to challenge CJ Johnson for the fifth position. Radcliffe took the spot away with two laps to go relegating CJ to the sixth spot. Up front Bubak was closing the gap between himself and front running Herbert as the white flag given to the field. When the checkered flag fell it was Brain Herbert taking the preliminary night win, his first win in the last two seasons with Jake Bubak, JD Johnson, Zac Taylor and Jeff Radcliffe rounding out the top five.
Heat Race Winners were Keefe Hemel, JD Johnson, Zac Taylor and Jeff Radcliffe.
The Keizer Aluminum Wheels Hard Charger Award goes to Jake Bubak, starting 10th and moving up 8 spots to finish 2nd.
