7.25.20 Path Valley Speedway Park Results

The 4th installment of the Austin Gelwicks Memorial got underway Saturday night at Path Valley. A moment of silence was given in remembrance of young Gelwicks who lost his life in an automobile accident in 2016. A special presentation of the National Anthem was performed as Austin Gelwick’s 69g thunder car piloted by his grandfather, Mike Gipe, paced the field with the flag. Pennsylvania State Police Troopers Farnsler, and Jendrzejewski were also present and followed the Gelwicks car around the track during the playing of the national anthem.

The 270cc micro sprints started the evening with a repeat of last week as the Myers brothers dominated the field. Craig Myers brought the field to the green and by lap 4 brother Cory was right behind him. Cory would make several attempts to pass Craig but was unable to do so. Adrian Shaffer would take 3rd place on lap 5, but was unable to advance any further. A caution on lap 14 for Jerry Palm Jr. would restack the field, but Craig Myers would check out on the restart and take the win.

The ever exciting traveling PASS 305 sprint series made their return to the high banks of Path Valley for their second appearance of the season. A wide, and racy surface would provide a lot of two wide racing in the 305 sprints. John Walp would bring the field to the green for the feature. Jake Frye, who started 7th and would advance to 3rd ,would bring out the caution on lap 4. At the restart it would be Walp, then Brad Mellott in second. A hard charging Garrett Bard would take to the high side of the track utilizing the cushion to get momentum and pass both Walp and Mellott to take the lead. However, Bard’s lead would be cut short as the caution would come out and he would have to return to his position from the last completed lap, which was second. At the restart Bard would again use the cushion to pass Walp on lap 9. Walp would not give up that easy as he would work the lower groove of the track and take the lead back from Bard. Lapped traffic would become a factor on lap 12 as Jeff Weaver would catch Bard and take second place. A late race caution would work in the favor of Weaver as he would pass Walp to take the lead and the win.

Doug Sales would jump out to an early lead from the outside pole position in the 4 cylinder thunder car feature as he tried to hold off veteran Jeremy Ott who had advanced from 6th to 2nd in just two laps. Sales and Ott would swap the lead several times having to weave in and out of lapped traffic. Ott would eventually take the lead on lap 9 and retain it until lap 19 as he began to slow and ultimately retire from the race. Sales would again regain the lead as he would soon become challenged by Parker Starr. A spin by Starr on lap 29 have him rejoin the tail end of the field as Doug Sales would go onto win the feature event.

The limited late model feature would find its first caution early on as Jakob Piper would spin and collect several cars on the initial lap resulting in a complete restart. Bryan Benton and Derick Quade would lead the field to the restart with Benton jumping out to an early lead. Randy Burkholder would soon advance to second place passing Quade using the lower groove of the speedway. Burkholder using that lower groove would soon catch race leader Benton and begin to put pressure on him. At lap 8 Burkholder would take the lead and start to pull away by 6 car lengths. A caution on lap 12 would allow the field to bunch up for the restart as Quade would soon put pressure on Benton for second. Working the high line Quade would pass Benton on lap 14 to take second place. In an almost tragic event a squirrely car at the tail of the field would give race leader Randy Burkholder trouble coming out of turn 2 as he had to do some agriculture driving through a portion of the infield in an effort to miss hitting him. This would give Quade an advantage as he charged off turn 2 mounting a challenge on Burkholder; however, Burkholder was able to gain his momentum back and would go onto win the race.

Joe Timmons would pick up his first career win in the 600cc micro sprint feature leading all twenty laps. Randy Kunkle, Jr. would advance from his 5th starting spot to 2nd, but could not catch Timmons. Multi-feature winner, Reese Nowartarski would advance to 3rd from his 8th starting position, but was unable to mount a challenge on Kunkle, or Timmons.

The last feature of the evening was the 4 Cylinder Strictly Stocks with Chris Anderson picking up the win. Patience would prevail for Anderson as he would make a last lap pass on Bruce Betres to pick up the win. Rusty Garlock would receive the hard charger award starting in 18th and advancing to 3rd.

Both feature winners Randy Burkholder, and Jeff Weaver were awarded a guaranteed starting spot in the Night of Power on Friday, August 14th in their respective divisions. Path Valley returns to action on Saturday, August 1st featuring the Wingless Super Sportsman, Central PA Legends, 270cc & 600cc micros, 4 Cylinder Thunder Cars, and SCDRA 4 Cylinder Strictly Stocks.
