5.27.21 FAST Sprints Results

A star studded field of sprint car teams and drivers filled the pit area at Atomic Speedway last night to pay tribute to the 68 year old facility and its years known as K-C Raceway. A year ago, Kyle Larson had a lead in the FAST race and appeared on his way to victory, but a brush with the turn 4 wall cut down the right rear tire forcing him to charge from the rear of the field to finish 6th. Last night was sweet revenge and an even bigger payday to get redemption as he collected $20,000 in winning the 2nd annual 40 lap “K-C Classic”.

The evening began with a 39 car field split into two flights for time trials. Rico Abreu set overall quick time in ARP Fasteners qualifying with a lap of 11.394 to lead flight A over Paige Polyak, Brinton Marvel, Hunter Schuerenberg, and Bryan Nuckles. Flight B was led by Larson with a lap of 11.489 with Cole Duncan, Lachlan McHugh, Cale Conley and Jake Hesson rounding out the top 5.

Heat race action was intense with a wild ride in NAPA of Fremont heat 1 for Caleb Helms in the Joe Seeling 97. Helms climbed out of the car unhurt. Cale Thomas went on to win the heat. Hunter Schuerenberg won Helms Construction heat 2 while Kyle Larson won The Cushion.com heat race #3. Hoosier Tire heat 4 saw a jumbled start that tangled RJ Jacobs, Stuart Brubaker and Cole Duncan with Brubaker getting the short end of the proverbial stick, a highly damaged race car and a tank of methanol fuel across the track. The Lawrenceburg safety crew, led by the incomparable Bobby Gompf, was on the scene to safely handle the situation. Cale Conley claimed that final heat win.

Jac Haudenschild and Harli White claimed the twin MSD Ignitions 10 lap B-Mains. Originally scheduled to start 22 cars, Atomic promoter Brad McCown and FAST promoter Aaron Fry agreed to split the cost to start 2 additional cars, bring the K-C Classic to a full field of 24 of the best!

The Ti22 Performance hat redraw saw Australian newcomer, Lachlan McHugh draw the pole position. McHugh was making his first EVER appearance in the United States and doing so on his 23rd birthday! Cale Conley drew the outside from row with Schuerenberg and Larson in row 2. Paige Polyak and Cale Thomas made up row three with Rico Abreu and Cole Duncan starting from row 4.

It took 3 attempts to finally get the race underway, but finally it was Cale Conley who got the jump and led the event early on. Unfortunately, a plethora of yellows slowed the event in the first 11 laps that saw crowd favorites Abreu and Ducan pull into the infield and out of the event. Once back underway on lap 12, the remaining 19 cars on the track reeled off 29 straight green flag laps on the extremely fast 3/8 mile oval. Larson was able to get around Conley for the lead and opened up a sizable advantage. It was Hunter Schuerenberg who got rolling well through the stretch run, getting by Conley for the runner-up spot and closing the gap on Larson.

In the final laps, Schuerenberg closed rapidly but time ran out as Larson crossed the line to claim the popular victory. Behind the lead duo was Conley in third with McHugh 4th in his American debut and Paige Polyak rounding out the top 5. Cale Thomas, Jac Haudenschild, Lee Jacobs, Greg Wilson and Jordan Ryan completed the top 10.

The Ti22 Performance FAST tour now moves on to Fremont Speedway tomorrow night for an appearance with its companion series, the traditional non wing MPD Racing Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series!
