Ontario County garnered international acclaim Wednesday night as Australian ace Peter Britten and Canadian transplant Stewart Friesen split Super DIRTcar Series Twin 60s for Pepsi Big-Block Modifieds at Land Of Legends Raceway.
Now residing in the DIRTcar Northeast hub of Weedsport NY, Britten led off with a command performance in the 60-lap opener presented by Honeoye Auto Parts and Emerson Oil Company/Castrol that was postponed due to rain on July 20. In the same fearless fashion, SDS points leader Friesen traveling west from his home in Sprakers NY copped the 30-mile nightcap presented by Honeoye Auto Parts, DC Rauscher Contractor and Seneca Auto Sales & Service.
Both drivers, sporting Bicknell chassis and Billy The Kid powerplants, collected $7,500 for their triumphant marches on neutral soil in front of a capacity crowd.
Mirroring the mid-week dominance displayed by his Big-Block brethren, Tyler Corcoran led flag-to-flag to capture the 30-lap Northeast Series Central Region headliner for Speed Connection Sportsman.
Once again calling Canandaigua home on Saturday throughout the summer, Britten wrestled the the lead from weekly rival Tim Fuller on a lap nine restart then sped on for a decisive 9.5-sec. victory, his second of the ’21 campaign in Canandaigua.
“It’s been a long time coming, got most of my tears out on the cool down lap,” beamed Britten, 33, the multi-time Australian V8 Modified national champion from Brisbane, Queensland who debuted against the Americans in 2009 before following the SDS full-time in 2011. He earned the first of now seven feature wins at LOLR in 2016, garnering his only other tour trophy at Sharon (Ohio) Speedway in July of ’17.
“This (series) deal is just crazy hard. I’m very fortunate to have such great people around me. Only had one other tour win 4-5 years ago and been close a lot of other times. Just awesome to do it at my hometrack here on Saturday nights. Have lots of fans cheering me on, and it makes it even more special that my daughter is here.”
Before rain flooded the fairgrounds on the rescheduled July date, Britten was quickest in his time trial group and followed with a heat win over Friesen. He re-drew outside front row for Wednesday’s main event yet fell behind pole-sitter Tim Fuller when head flagman Dave Farney unfurled the initial green flag.
With five laps in the books, yellow lights flashed around the speedway as 11th starting Friesen uncharacteristically limped pitside with a right-front flat tire curtailing his early effort. The ensuing restart was all Britten needed to flex his muscle, blasting around Fuller in the black no. 21A Pepsi-Ryder Racing-Beyea Custom Headers entry to forge a lead he would never relinquish.
While “Batman” flew high and low uncontested navigating the smooth half-miler over the remaining caution-free laps, individual battles waged throughout the 28-car field filling every lane around the historic fairgrounds clay oval. Rudolph finally grabbed second from Fuller on lap 53 with Jimmy Phelps holding off a valiant effort by 26th starting Jack Lehner to round out the top-5 in the 24-minute main.
Maneuvering at a frantic pace the second half of the race, Friesen closed in on sixth-place finisher Larry Wight under the checkers with Mat Williamson, Tim Sears Jr. and nine-time LOLR points champ Matt Sheppard the last on the lead lap. Adam Pierson, all-time Canandaigua winner Alan Johnson and veteran Pat Ward were the only drivers not finish.
“Will be having a couple Pepsis later on, maybe with a little Captain (Morgan, spiced rum) in them,” remarked Britten, who vaulted from sixth to third-place behind Sheppard in the series standings when the night came to end. “We work our butts off every day so its great to get a reward like this.”
“Rick Ryder is here and I can’t thank Rich (Scagliotta) and Randie (Rich’s crew chief) for all they’ve done. Just kinda overwhelmed right now, over the moon with this win. Racing is a funny thing, just when you think you’ve got it figured out, we’ll probably get lapped in the next race!” Britten added.
Noted runner-up Rudolph and LOLR’s current points leader post-race, “Starting 10th tonight put us at a little disadvantage with (race) being only 60 laps. A caution near the end may have changed things a little but Peter looked pretty hooked up so hats off to him.”
Fuller also confirmed Britten’s strength, “I got the drop on Peter early, next caution he got me, then just checked out. But finishing third with this group is nothing bad.”
Round two of the twin 60s included 38 Big-Block teams vying for a spot in the 26-car feature field. This time it was Rudolph earning the Billy Whittaker Cars Fast Time Award after a one-lap clocking of 19.370sec. (92.927 mph). While Rudolph re-drew third among the top-12 heat finishers, another second-generation standout Mike Mahaney selected the pole alongside a very fast Friesen who picked #2.
As expected, Friesen jumped out front immediately, but a multi-car crash farther back in the pack forced out a rare red flag and a complete restart in the aftermath. Initial contact between Wight (started 9th) and Britten (11th) set off a chain-reaction, with Wight and onrushing Daniel Johnson Jr. (19th) rolling over down the homestretch. Justin Wright ended up on top of Wight’s demolished machine while Jordan McCreadie slammed in to end his night with not a single lap scored. All four drivers exited their cars with only their wallets hurt.
Back under green, Mahaney moved to the top side right away leaving Friesen in his tire tracks. Yet after a half-dozen laps shadowing the leader, Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario native Friesen ducked low across the stripe and his potent #44 Halmar International-Bart Contracting car moved to the point with 13 laps showing on the Elab Scoreboard.
The mount of past LOLR Sportsman champion Dave Marcuccilli came to a stop on the turn three pit entrance road for the final slowdown on lap 35, erasing a solid 6-second lead for Friesen, yet not discarding any bit of determination as the Northeast’s hottest driver eventually rolled on to a straightaway victory.
“Man, this place has been a thorn in my side for a lot of years,” remarked Friesen, 38, who posted a pair of Big-Block wins at LOLR in 2005 when he was recognized as DIRTcar Northeast’s rookie of the year. Sixteen years later, with 40 SDS wins under his belt, he now holds a 66-point lead in search of his first series championship heading down the stretch.
“We haven’t really had a good package for this place but we threw a bunch of stuff at it tonight and after hot laps it was good. We ended up running the same tires in the second feature as the first, put a new set on for the heat but we went back to the old ones for the race,” said Friesen, who leads Sheppard 1,477-1,411, winning half of the 10 SDS races run since April after kicking off the season with a pair of trophies at Volusia Speedway Park during the Florida DIRTcar Nationals in February.
“What a race car. Thanks to Bicknell and Halmar, and everybody on this team as well as Chris Larsen, he gives us everything we need to get the job done and this is a big one for us.”
After drawing seventh, Fuller found the high side to his liking the second half of the race as he charged from eighth the last 30 laps to wrap-up runner-up laurels. The Watertown veteran cracked the front-five by lap 40, passed Rudolph for 4th on lap 41, Sheppard for 3rd on lap 42 and Mahaney for 2nd on lap 44, with 4.9-sec. separating him from Friesen and a second tour win of 2021 in the end.
“When the right rear (tire) cooled down under that caution I was sitting eighth,” said Fuller, crowned SDS champ in 2005, Friesen’s first year. I knew I could ring that outside for a little bit before the right rear overheated but Friesen was just too strong. I was able to catch everybody that was slamming to the bottom running nose-to-tail, it was cleaner down there, smooth without rubber. You had to be on the bottom or way outside.”
Despite Mahaney’s third-place finish, the King Ferry kingpin still dropped from third to fourth on the points chart after his fourth top-five tally registered in 2021.
“It’s been awhile since I’ve had a decent starting spot,” said Mahaney, who won his lone Big-Block feature at LOLR in 2016. “We were terrible in the first feature so we made some wholesale changes to the car. They made it slightly better in the heat and much better for the feature. We seem to be really loose or really tight.”
“I got lane choice on the second start, so I took the high lane but my top groove kind of went away. Didn’t surprise me that Friesen got by. After how poor the first feature was, I just knew I had to get a good finish and stay with my game plan. Friesen just had a better, faster car tonight,” Mahaney figured.
LOLR points leader Rudolph crossed the line fourth and is the only driver to log top-5 finishes in all 11 events at the fairgrounds. Seven-time SDS titlist and two-time tour race winner in ’21, Sheppard filled out the final front-five to remain the closest challenger to Friesen as the battle rages on for Big-Block supremacy in the Northeast.
The Super DIRTcar Series returns to action at Orange County Fair (NY) Speedway on Thr. Aug. 12 with the $10,000-to-win ‘Centennial 102’ taking center stage for top Big-Block taveling teams. The final series stop at LOLR is the 3rd Annual Gerald Haers Memorial on Sat., Sept. 18, with the 100-lap winner taking home $10,000-plus and the 20th-place feature finisher earning no less than $1,000.
SPORTSMAN IN SESSION
The first of two Sportsman Series stops scheduled at the Land of Legends attracted 28 teams on Wednesday with every entry making the feature race line-up. Matching their Big-Block counterparts, group time trials were held while a trio of qualifying heats helped determine the starting order.
Corcoran was fast out of the box aboard the no. 64 Halmar Int’l-Power Seal-Dirt Track Digest/Bicknell mount, setting second fast time in his qualifying group behind Chris Mackey before besting Mackey in the first heat race. The Central Square chauffeur then drew outside front row and out-dragged Canandaigua regular Zach Payne to begin the final event of the night.
“The past few years we’ve struggled here so not really sure going into tonight how it was going to be,” revealed Corcoran, 19, a weekly front-runner closer to home at Can-Am Speedway on Friday and Fulton Speedway on Saturday. “Time trialed second then took off in the heat, didn’t even touch this (car), not even a little bit. Hoped the track would stay the same at the end of the night and it did so here we are.”
“Set the car up just like we do at Can-Am and like we do pretty much everywhere else. Told my dad I’m going to go out and drive it just like I did in the heat race and try not to mess up. Just tried to do everything I could to get around lapped traffic. Got held up once then started making moves on the top in turns three and four, could really put the car anywhere.”
Like Britten and Friesen in the Modified mains before him, Corcoran was on rails once out front in the Sportsman showdown. Payne, who won the Central Region opener at Weedsport in June, remained second the entire distance as did fellow LOLR competitor Zach Sobotka who locked down third for the duration.
Canandaigua’s own Alex Payne improved from 10th starting position to finish fourth ahead of Mackey while Central Region points leader Matt Janczuk, the recent tour winner at Brewerton Speedway, beat out New York’s Capital District invader Andrew Buff in the closing stages. Weekly Canandaigua wheelmen Paul Guererri, division points leader Matt Guererri and Dalton Martin took down top-10 spots under the final checkered flag.
“To win here, the place I actually drove my first race car, is pretty awesome. Never expected to win two series races in a row, Can-Am and now here. Its just unbelievable,” added Corcoran, whose father Jeremie operated then named Canandaigua Motorsports Park (2011-17) before turning over the reins to current track promoter Paul Cole. The talented teen became the fifth first-time winner in 10 events this year at LOLR, pocketing $1,000 for his latest romp in the 15-mile main.
Corcoran, now just six markers behind Janczuk, 580-574, gets a chance to make it three straight on tour and two in a row up north when Can-Am hosts the fifth Central Region points race on Sept. 10. The series returns to the Ontario Co. Fairgrounds in Canandaigua when LOLR stages the regional finale on Sept. 18 as part of the 3rd Annual Gerald Haers Memorial.

In a never seen before double dip at LOLR, the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprinters will be chasing the $2,500 winner’s share while a $2,000 first-place payoff rewards the A-Verdi Storage Containers Patriot Sprint Tour victor.
ESS stars will contend in the Danny Willmes Enterprises Dash for Cash before their 25-lap A-Main followed by a complete show for the top Patriot travelers. Sportsman, 305 Sprint Cars, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks fill the colossal card presented by Admar Construction Equipment & Supply, Howell Properties LLC and Donath Motor Worx while BB Mods take the night off.
Practice leads off trackside activity at 5:30pm followed by qualifying at 6:30pm. Pit gates open at 3:30pm with spectators admitted into the grandstands at 5 o’clock.
