9.25.21 Lernerville Speedway Results

Sarver, PA (September 25, 2021) David Gravel of Watertown, CT came into the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series sanctioned ‘Commonwealth Clash’ with high hopes as Lernerville Speedway is one of his favorite tracks that the Outlaws visit. Gravel’s high hopes turned into a night where he would set fast time, win his heat race, win the dash, and hold off a hard charging Brad Sweet to also win the $10,000 to-win main event.

By virtue of his dash win, Gravel led the field to the green flag with Wayne Johnson on his outside. Johnson won the drag race into turn one and took the lead as the field completed the first lap. The pace was slowed on lap two as Marcus Dumesny got upside down in turn one. Johnson continued to lead when racing resumed with Gravel hounding him lap after lap. As Gravel kept Johnson within striking distance, series point leader Brad Sweet made his way past Donny Schatz for the third spot and began reeling in the leaders. Johnson caught lapped traffic on lap 10 which helped Gravel and Sweet to gain ground. Sweet was the first to take advantage of the traffic as he made his way by Gravel for the second spot on lap 11. Sweet wasted no time tracking down the leader as on lap 12 he blasted his way past Johnson to take command of the 35-lap main event.

Sweet pulled out to a full second lead over the field while Gravel got by Johnson for second on lap 16 and set his sights on Sweet for the lead. Gravel explored different lines around ‘The Action Track’ in search of the fastest route to catch the race leader as early race leader Johnson, fell back to fifth as Schatz and James McFadden were both able to get by. With 20 laps completed, Sweet had a 1.8 second lead but on lap 22, the 2021 Lernerville Speedway track champion, A.J. Flick, stopped in turn one to bring out the caution and negate the lead that Sweet had. On the ensuing restart, Sweet held the advantage through turns one and two but Gravel got a run down the back straightaway and dove under Sweet as the duo entered turn three and completed the slider in turn four to take the lead. By lap 25 Gravel held a one second lead and pounded the cushion for the last 10 laps to stretch his lead to 1.478 seconds when the checkered flag fell giving him his 10th World of Outlaws win of the season and his third ‘Commonwealth Clash’. Sweet finished second with Schatz in third, McFadden fourth, and Sheldon Haudenschild finishing fifth. Carson Macedo came home sixth followed by Jacob Allen in seventh, Logan Schuchart eighth, Kasey Kahne ninth, and Wayne Johnson rounded out the top-ten.

‘I had enough position to send in there on him (Sweet) and I was able to squeak by, and that was the race,’ Gravel said in Terry Bowser Excavating Victory Lane. ‘Once I got by him, I knew, I was going to have to get my elbows up and run hard for the 11-lap dash to the end. None of the lappers were running the top in (turns) one and two and I could run it extremely hard. I really wanted to get 10 wins, it feels really good to get double-digit wins, that’s for sure.’

Logan McCandless took the lead from Jarrett Rosencrance on lap eight of the 20-lap Allegheny Sprint Tour feature event and never looked back to claim the victory. McCandless was followed by Rosencrance in second, Jeff Weaver, Jr. in third, Steve Kenawell was fourth with the Allegheny Sprint Tour point leader, Steve Cousins coming home fifth. Kyle Colwell was sixth with Rob Felix, Scott Frack, Jake Gomola, and Tylor Cochran completing the top-ten.
