10.2.21 Pennsylvania Sprint Series Results
By: Frank Buhrman
Derek Hauck may be running fewer races in 2021, but the work schedule that has kept him away from the race track hasn’t prevented him from assembling a season record that would be the envy of most full-timers.
Hauck won his second straight PA Sprint Series feature Saturday night, taking the interregional Nittany 40 feature at Clinton County Speedway.
The win was the Allenwood driver’s third in just 10 PASS starts in 2021 in the Fultz Auto Body of Lock Haven/Hills Garage/White Horse Graphics #33. He now has finished in the top five in seven of those races.
Hauck also has run on occasion with the Laurel Highlands Sprint Series, with a sixth and a ninth in previous Clinton County appearances this year.
He had finished sixth in the inaugural Nittany 40 last season, when he had one victory and eight top-fives in an 18-race rookie season with PASS.
Saturday’s win came over a strong line-up of cars from PASS and LHSS. Veteran Scott Lutz of Jonestown posted the fastest time in qualifying with a 12.983 lap. Jared Zionkowski of Wyalusing, Garrett Bard of Wells Tannery and Hauck also led their qualifying groups.
Those four drivers won the heat races for the 34-car field, with Ryan Lynn of Hollidaysburg taking the B-Main.
The top group maintained positions atop the leaderboard for most of the race, although Bard spun early and had to work his way back through the field. While Hauck was challenged in the heavy lapped traffic, he fought off all competitors.
Ken Duke Jr. of Selinsgrove trailed Hauck by 1.195 seconds to post a runner-up finish in the 40-lap feature, with Zionkowski taking third. Dom Melair of Warrington finished fourth, and Dylan Proctor of Lock Haven was fifth.
Completing the top 10 were Josh Beamer, Tyler Cochran, Matt Tebbs, Lutz and Bard.
While Bard’s run from the rear into the final top 10 was impressive, the official hard charger was Jeff Weaver, who started 22nd after qualifying through the B-Main and came home 12th, an advance of 10 positions. Proctor’s top-5 finish came after starting 11th.
This weekend, PASS competitors have a unique split schedule, with two races running the same night. The series joins the World of Outlaws on the Port Royal Speedway program Saturday night, but that is an invitational race, limited to the top 26 finishers in the regular-season point standings at Port Royal. The rest of the PASS racers, including several strong runners who simply haven’t run regularly enough to earn top points positions, will join the Mid Atlantic Sprint Series for racing at BAPS Motor Speedway, where super sportsman cars and three divisions of modifieds also are scheduled.
