SEYMOUR, Tenn. (April 5, 2019) — The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series made its first-ever visit to the Mitch and Tanya McCarter-owned 411 Motor Speedway on Friday for running of the $12,000-to-win Tennessee’s Action Track 50, and before the biggest crowd in track history Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., captured his first victory with the series in impressive fashion by leading flag-to-flag.

Bailes shot out into the lead at start of the race over Dale McDowell, Jimmy Owens, Josh Richards, and hometown driver Ryan King who thrilled the partisan local fans by setting fast-time during qualifying at 13.348 seconds.

“This seems unbelievable,” said the 29-year-old Bailes. “We have tried for so long to win one of these and we just couldn’t get it done. To come to a new track here at 411 Motor Speedway and to get it done is just unimaginable. I felt good on the bottom and then when I got to lapped traffic I was slowing down. I knew I needed to search around and do something different.”

Bailes added: “This place is awesome. I think if we would have run another 50 laps it would have been even better. I was happy with it. There was grip on the bottom. I didn’t have to worry about the top for the first half of the race and then it got racy all over. This win is now at the top of my list for sure. I want to thank Barry and Lance Wright (Barry Wright Race Cars), Ronnie McCarter and all of my crew. It was a great team win that’s for sure.”

The winner’s Barry Wright Race Cars ICON Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by: Felony Farms, Service Transport Inc., Bailes Construction, Big A’s Custom Graphics, C&H Paving, Bobby Taylor Oil, Nichols Plumbing, Penske Shocks, Hoosier Tire South, Fred Caldwell Chevrolet, and Viper Risk Management Group.

McIntosh, also looking for his first career Lucas Oil win, settled for second at the finish. “Our car was pretty good. I had it prepared to run the top. I don’t think Ross (Bailes) knew the top was there. I was just biding my time out there. I thought I could get up to him and make a run for the win. I think I showed him the top one time and he moved up there in traffic. We had a great race for second with Jimmy (Owens). Racing with these guys and from where we started that’s a pretty awesome run,” said McIntosh who started sixth.

Owens finished third after a late-race charge. “We have been pretty good in East Tennessee so far this year. We have had good race cars all year long. It feels good to finally finish a Lucas Oil race. Last year we had such terrible misfortune. This year seemed like it was going to start off the same way but we just aren’t going to let that happen. Donald (McIntosh) had a good car, and he was up on the wheel. I felt like we could have gotten second, but we are just happy to finish on the podium.”

Bailes recorded the win over McIntosh, Owens, current series point leader Jonathan Davenport and McDowell.

Completing the top 10 finishers were Kyle Bronson, King, Josh Richards, Tyler Erb and Earl Pearson Jr.

Jesse Lowe earned the pole starting position for the Crate Late Model feature over a stellar field of competitors with a fast-time of 14.218 seconds, but it was outside front row starter Jason Welshan of Maryville grabbing the lead on the opening lap. The action behind Welshan and Lowe saw Brandon Williams, Trevor Sise, Heath Alvey, Michael Courtney, Rusty Ballenger, Drew Kennedy, Greg Martin, Ross White, Mack McCarter and others battling two- and three-wide for position.

Once Sise passed Williams for second he began pressuring Welshan for the lead, dropping to the inside in the turns on both ends of the track. But lap-after-lap Welshan maintained his advantage to get the victory over Sise, Lowe, Courtney and Williams. … However, the results won’t become official until the outcome of post-race protests on both Welshan (engine) and Sise (tires).

Jake Whitehead of Maryville was fast qualifier in Sportsman Late Model at 14.789 seconds. He jumped out into the lead at the start and never looked back en route to capturing his third straight feature win. Whitehead was chased to the checkered flag by Addison Cardwell, Jed Emert, Adam Mitchell and Warren McMahan.
