5.31.19 Bedford Speedway Results
Mason Zeigler made one of his infrequent Bedford visits pay off in a big way as he scored a convincing win Friday night at the track. The event, 50 laps in memory of Bedford’s first ever feature winner Billy Winn, went for 50 laps and was worth $8300 to Zeigler in respect to the 83rd anniversary of the track’s opening. It was Zeigler’s first ever Bedford win.
In other action Travis Calhoun fought his way to the front late to score the Semi Late win before Josh Frankenberry did the same to claim Pure Stock honors.
Mason Zeigler, who has started several Bedford events with negligiible luck, was clearly the star of the 50 lap Late Model event. He finished second in his heat, drew the pole for the event, got the drop on the field at the start and never looked back.
Jason Covert, fresh from a dazzling second place finish the prior week, move into second early and shadowed Zeigler early, but Zeigler drew away with each passing lap. Alex Ferree and Gregg Satterlee battled for third until Satterlee slowed with a flat tire on lap 17 with a flat tire.
That caution changed the complexion of the field as one lap after the bunched restart, Dan Stone got turned on the frontstretch, causing a wild multi car pileup and bringing out the red flag. On the restart, Zeigler again pulled away, but as the race went 15 green flag laps, Covert began to close on the leader.
Covert appeared to repeat last week’s late race challenge as the field approached lapped traffic, but a yellow for Tyler Bare again slowed the field on lap 35. On what became a 15 lap run to the finish, Zeigler had renewed vigor and ran off to a convincing win. Covert again settled for second, ahead of Ferree, Jeff Rine and Rick Eckert.
Satterlee, Covert and Rine won the heats.
Clearly the race of the night was the 15 lap Semi Late event. Greg Hainsey was the early leader with Chubby Childers in pursuit. When Childers half spun in turn four, The battle for second became Kyle Weyandt and Bill Replogle. As the race went all green after a quick lap four caution. Travis Calhoun joined the pair battling for second.
Calhoun working the bottom, went lap after lap battling for second, alternately gaining and losing distance in that battle but the trio all were gaining on leader Hainsey. Furthermore, Brian Weyandt Jr was gaining on all of them. Eventually it was a five car battle at the front as they all ran down Hainsey,
Calhoun finally cleared Weyandt for second on lap 12 and instantly was all over Hainsey. As the field took the two to go flag, Calhoun inched ahead and romped to the win. Hainsey held second ahead of Weyandt, Replogle and Weyandt Jr as the top five finished under a blanket, Kyle Weyandt and Replogle won the heats.
Dalton Ritchey was the early Pure Stock leader ahead of a roaring herd of chasers. Ritchey overshot turn one and banked off the wall in turn one on lap five and gave up the lead to Charlie Clise, but when the yellow flew for Larry Foor, he regained the lead.
Only two laps later Ritchey repeated his brush with the wall and Clise took over, this time officially. Josdh Frankenberry, working the bottom as the Semi Late winner had, was all over Clise for four laps until finally inching by on lap nine. After that Frankenberry ran off to the win.
Clise, John Howsare, Laura Chamberlain and Kevin Weyandt trailed the winner. Kyle Deneen and Kevin Weyandt won the heats.
