10.12.19 Canyon Speedway Park Results

Tony Steele, Peoria, Ariz. (Oct 13, 2019) – With IMCA points competition complete for the year, a four division card was featured this past Saturday night at Canyon. Billy Chester picked up the victory during the ASCS Wing Sprint Car portion of the show while Craig Parker dominated en route to another win in the SWDRA Late Models. Dusty Jager picked up his first win of the season at CSP during Dwarf Car action and Jackson Wellman snagged his second victory of the year to wrap up the year in the Micro Sprints.

ASCS Wing Sprints made their way for the third and final time this season to Peoria with 14 cars checked in for action at CSP Octoberfest. Two heat races to start off the night saw Glen Brace and Billy Chester picking up heat race victories. Jesse Baker shot out to the early lead as the green flag waved for the 25 lap feature event. As one lap clicked off, Chester made his move to the front, getting around Baker to lead lap 2. Battles ensued throughout the field with JT Imperial and Jesse Baker pleasing the crowd as they tossed sliders back and forth in the top five. Chester would roll away from the field, leading the remaining laps on the way to his first feature win in Peoria for the season. Colton Hardy would take runner up honors with Lorne Wofford, hard charger Alex Pettas and Imperial rounding out the top five. Wofford, Eric Wilkins and Chester split wins for the season at CSP, with Wofford and Imperial the only drivers to pick up a top 5 finish during all three events.

SWDRA Late Models also showed up in Peoria for the last time in 2019 with their fifth stop of the season. Bruce Duckett and John Cornell earned heat race wins early in the evening before Craig Parker led the field to the green flag during the main event. Parker sped away to the lead quickly as he tries to gain points on defending champion John Cornell before the season draws to a close. Side by side racing took place all over the speedway as Steve Stultz fought with Cornell in the top 3 while Brad Williams and Brian Schultz did battle behind them. Octoberfest turned out to be the Parker Show, as Craig raced away from the field to his 2nd feature win at CSP for the year, leading all 25 laps. Stultz beat out Cornell for the 2nd spot while Williams earned 4th ahead of Schultz. Point leader Cornell finishes out the season at CSP as the only driver in the club to earn a top 5 finish in each of the 5 events, splitting two wins each with Craig Parker while Don Shaw grabbed a win early in the season himself.

Dwarf Cars made their way to Canyon for the 8th time this season, their final stop before the Dwarf Car Nationals in November at the Harvest Hustle. Chris Vernon and Dusty Jager kicked off the night with heat race wins as 16 dwarfs prepared for feature action. Tyler Rodriguez jumped out to the quick lead, pacing the field for the first two circuits around the speedway. Heat race winner Vernon snagged the top spot away from Rodriguez to lead the next 4 laps while Jager worked his way through the field. After a lap 1 restart, Jager restarted at the tail end of the field before proceeding to make his way into second on lap 5. On lap 7 it would be Jager’s turn to lead the field, passing Vernon for the front spot. Jager would not look back, earning his first win of the year at Canyon, along with his 5th top 5. Dustin Washburn finished second ahead of Vernon, Cory Brown and Rodriguez. Jager and Rodriguez both own the most top fives for the season at CSP as the club prepares for their biggest race of the year.

CSP Micro Sprints ended their season on Saturday night, crowning a champion after 13 nights of action at Canyon. Drake Edwards and Josh Castro both grabbed heat race wins, besting the 13 cars checked in for the evening. After losing a motor in the heat race, championship contender Mason Keefer jumped into the machine normally driven by Larry Kesterson for the feature event. Keefer would see his title shot disappear as he would proceed to lose the chain on his machine early in the race. As Keefer went pit side, Jackson Wellman paced the field from the drop of the green. While Edwards and AJ Hernandez battled for the runner up spot, Wellman would widen the gap. Leading green to checker, Wellman would win the feature while Edwards beat out Hernandez for 2nd. Jason Smith and Tyler High rounded out the top 5 while Brandon Sutton would capture his first Arizona Micro Sprint championship. Sutton earned the title on the back of a consistent season, featuring 10 top 5 finishes in 13 events and only a single lap led.

Next up at CSP on November 29th and 30th will be the Harvest Hustle, featuring IMCA Modifieds ($1,250 to win each night) and IMCA Sport Mods ($1,000 to win each night) as well as the Dwarf Car Nationals and Mod Lite Stars Nationals.
