It was back to action at Tennessee’s Action Track with nearly 90 of the best drivers in east Tennessee doing battle in front of a packed crowd.
Wayne Rader has dominated the 2017 season in Modified Street but it would be Brad Davis who set fast time. A stacked field of 16 cars took the green with season point leader Wayne Rader taking the lead ahead of Davis, Chris Rickett, Lamar Hughes and the returning Jerry Hux in his brand new car. Michael Woods went for a spin in his qualifying lap so he had to start at the rear. He wouldn’t stay there very long as he quickly began working his way up through the pack. Lance Creaseman was another driver who had to work his way up from the back as he tried to follow Woods up to the front. Trouble for #44 Ken Hall as he had some handling issues and had to call it a night early. Chris Rickett would try the low line under Davis for the second spot but had to fall back in line. The top two began putting distance between themselves and Rickett and woods who was now in the top four. Both Rader and Davis had moved up to the high line setting a blistering pace. Davis kept inching closer and closer and finally with just 7 laps left made his move to take the top spot away. Davis would pull away in the final handful of laps to pick up his third win of the season.

Zach Sise has a choke hold on the point lead in Sportsman so it was a surprise to no one when he once again set fast time in qualifying. The green waved and it would be outside pole sitter Brad Seagle who took the lead with Sise, Josh Sneed, Warren McMahan and Chris Coffey rounding out the top five. Seagle wouldn’t be out front very long though as Sise would power by him and take control just 2 laps into the 20 scheduled. McMahan started in the third spot but began slipping backwards as the early laps ticked away. He had his hands full with a battle with Chris Coffey for the majority of the race. Adam Mitchell and Bradley Lewelling had a tough fight for the seventh spot early on as well. Kevin Lewis had moved his #15 up into the top four by the halfway point as he set his sights on Sneed for the third spot. Up front Sise would inch away from Seagle to stretch out his point lead even more.

A stout field of Steelhead Late Models were on hand to do battle for 30 laps. Season point leader Chase King once again set fast time in qualifying. With the green in the air it was former track Champion Jason Cardwell who took the lead ahead of King, Cory Hedgecock, last years Champion Trevor Sise and Mack McCarter. Hedgecock was ridding the cushion off turn two as he scrapped the outside wall. Michael Courtney didn’t turn in a qualifying lap and he had to start at the back of the pack. That wouldn’t keep him down as he picked them up and put them down moving his way towards the top five. Eddie King Jr and Ellery Leake had their own battle for a spot just outside the top five as the early laps ticked away. Hedgeock kept his momentum on the high line going as he chased down and passed Jason Cardwell for the lead. Chase King slipped back to the fourth spot as he lost a spot to Trevor Sise on the restart. Trouble for Eddie King JR who had a sixth place run going but had to pull off track early with issues. Sise and Cardwell would battle it out for the second spot with Cardwell eventually prevailing. Up front it was all Hedgecock who had pulled away and went on to pick up the win.

A season high 18 Classic cars were on hand to put on a great show for the fans. After a few issues on the start we got underway with Tony Trent putting his #501 on top of the scoring board with Chris Evans, Will Carey, Eli Keck and Marvin Ray holding down the top five spots. Carey picked up his first ever win at Volunteer Speedway earlier in the year and looked to be on track to be a serious contender as he battled with Evans for the runner up spot. There was no breathing room for Trent as he had Carey and Eli Keck all over him trying to take the lead away. John Stevens didn’t show up until after qualifying so he had to start at the rear of the pack. He would manage to move all the way up into the top five by race end putting on a driving clinic. Trent had lead the way every lap but looked to have over driven the turn headed into turn one and smacked the outside wall ending his night. With Trent behind the wall that handed the lead over to Eli Keck who would go on to pick up the win.

Next up was the $1,200 to win Brucebilt Open Wheel Modified feature. This race had been rained out a couple weeks ago but a strong field of 20 of the best Open Wheel drivers in the sport showed up. Shon Flanary earned the pole for the A main setting fast time in qualifying earlier in the day. Don Adams started out the outside but got a strong run on the start and took the lead ahead of Flanary, Clayton Miller, track point leader Jody Puckett and Chase King who was doing double duty after the Steelhead race earlier. Puckett and King had a great battle just behind the top three for the fourth position in the opening laps. Adams couldn’t get away from Flanary as the #98 was getting bigger and bigger in the mirror of the leader as they set a scorching pace around the top of the track. Flanary had found something on the bottom as he changed up his line closing in on the lead. 8 laps in and he made his move taking the top spot away from Adams. A late debris caution would slow the pace erasing the leaders advantage. It wouldn’t make much of a difference in the outcome as Flanary clearly had the best car and he pulled away from Adams to pick up the big win.

The final race of the night would be the 20 lap Mini Stock feature. John Byers has been the Mini Stock dominator the past couple seasons at 411 and he once again started on the front. With the green out it was Byers, Newton, Steve Owens Jr, the returning Thomas Clark and Terry Boshears your top five drivers. The battle of the race was between Thomas Clark, Steve Owens Jr and Tommy Newton as they fought for the runner up spot basically the entire race. All this would be well behind John Byers who cruised to another win.
